Q: Mac Pro keeps logging out since El Capitan

Upgraded my Mac Pro to El Capitan, all went well. I logged in, then logged into iCloud and that also went well. But then it crashed with a kernel panic, restarted OK.

It now is running OK but after a few minutes it will log me off and back to the password prompt. Very frustrating and not able to work with it in such very short windows of time.

Anybody else seeing this?

Paul.

Whats your configuration?  2 Geforce 120's?  Keep us updated if it crashes again if you can.

    Mac Pro (Early 2009)

    2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

    8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

30" and 23" Apple Cinema Displays, each with their own NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB graphics

    Apple RAID Card

Sorry, it crashed and logged out several times during the evening, but much less frequently now that I've turned off spaces for each display. We're on the right track ... there's something about multiple displays, the early 2009 Mac Pro and El Capitan that doesn't work.

I'll "turn on everything" and leave it running overnight. My guess ... it will still "be here" in the morning, but once I start using it ...

Sorry for the time delay in input....I've tested turning on/off spaces for each display, tried downloading GT 120 drivers.  Sometimes I feel as though I've struck gold, but it ALWAYS logs me out after a certain amount of time.

To help troubleshoot, I've gone to bed once logged in, and in a "normal" state.  Each time I wake up in the morning that I have tried this (twice now), I am sadly logged out.

Some say that certain gestures or actions will cause the logout.....I have experienced logouts regardless if I am sitting there staring at the screen waiting for Apple to send out the fix, or trying to make a logout happen by multiple random actions (which always works), whether it be moving the mouse, opening a folder, firing off an application, mousing over to my second monitor....even shaking the mouse to test out El Capitan's new "find the pointer" action has resulted in a logout.

It truly seems to be a random act of logoutness....

Have you tried using only one monitor?

    1. Shutdown and power off
    2. Attach a single monitor only to your setup on your primary graphics card
    3. Startup holding down command-option-p-r (PRAM reset) until you hear a loud chime

With a single monitor all seems OK. It doesn't need the PRAM reset. I shut down the machine completely, unplugged the second screen and restarted the machine without any special key combinations. The machine seems to be running fine now. At least for half an hour or so where previously it would crash back to login within minutes.

A practical question that is related to the next step in fixing my situation, more of a hardware thing. Both my screens are Apple screens with a minidisplay port connection. Both the GT120 graphics card and the ATI Radeon HD4870 have one mini display port port and one DVI port. So, to connect both my screens to one of those cards I need an adapter that converts the male mini display port to a male DVI. I have been looking for this on the internet, but all I am seeing is adapters that convert a male DVI into a male mini display port.

I've got 2 NVIDA GeForce GT 120 cards.  One now does not work, gives garbage and causes crashes.  Was working fine with Yosemite.  System had too many spaces on install. (Found 27!).  Now using one 120 card with 2 monitors.  So far is stable with 8 total spaces.

Yes, one monitor works fine.  But this is the specific problem....

No other potential fixes have worked, expect using just one monitor.

I can use two monitor on my GT 120 with no problem. Problem is if I move one monitor to my 5770 card

Thanks! At least I know it is available somewhere. Might not be so easy to get one to Europe at a reasonable price :-).

    Mac Pro Early 2009 Quad-Core 2,66 Ghz.

I've just removed the GT 120 Card to only use the GTX 650 Ti Boost with my 2 screens => El Capitan works fine, no login window.

I've also tried with only one GT 120 and it works too.

I can not consider it's a real solution, but it works.

Same problem on MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012) with external monitor attached.

I'll try to use a single monitor with MBA display closed.

    Hi,

I'm see exactly the same problem - it's looks like it's something to do with either having multiple monitors or multiple graphics cards installed.

    MacPro3,1

2 x NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 2 monitors on each.

I have "Displays have separated Spaces" turned off.

Although the Log Out it seems random, it seems to happen if I click on a monitor that is connected to one Graphics card and then a monitor on the other card quite a lot which might be a clue. I've also turned down the Mouse tracking speed a little which *seems* to make it happen less often.

This is really annoying - someone else upgraded this system to 10.11 and I thought they had taken a back-up (did have 10.10 Installed) first (I asked them to), but it seems they forgot to.

Does anyone know if I can use "Carbon Copy Cloner" (or some other tool) to help me down-grade back to 10.10? I mean without having to erase by boot disk and start again?

    All the Best

    Dave
