Q: Photos in El Capitan

I updated to El Capitan today on both my iMac and MBA. I've been running Photos on both, having spent weeks waiting as Photos on each machine uploaded the system Photos library for each machine to iCloud then slowly sorting out the photos and videos that didn't match on both machines and finding and eliminating duplicates. Finally, after a few months of working on this, I was able to get the numbers and albums close to matching on both machines.

Then out came El Capitan today with an updated Photos app. the installation went smoothly on the iMac which I did first. Opening Photos for the first time, it spent a few minutes Updating the Library", then everything was fine. just like before.

I then turned to the MBA. After El Capitan was installed, I opened Photos. It similarly started the "Updating Library", but after about a minute, a message popped up that said: "The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” has inconsistencies that must be repaired." It offered a message button, "Repair". I clicked that and it started preparing, but almost immediately, a new message popped up: " The library could not be opened. The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” could not be recognized." It offered me two buttons: "Open Other..." or "Quit".

i only have that one Photos  System library, “Photos Library.photoslibrary”, so I chose quit and immediately the whole program closed. No further error or quit message.

I'm aware of the manual Repair option, Command+Option+Open Photos, so I tried that. got the option to repair, and it started. It lasted for about 10 minutes, never getting beyond 5%, then it all crashed. Same error message and options as before: " The library could not be opened. The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” could not be recognized." It offered me two buttons: "Open Other..." or "Quit". So I can't open the library nor will it repair.

FWIW, i had the Photos library on the iMac ticked for Full Copies on the iMac, but had the MBA using the space-saving option. I can't really transfer a copy of the library from the iMac to the MBA and then choose that as the new system Library on the MBA because it wouldn't fit on the remaining free space I have left.

Any ideas on what I should do next would be appreciated (looking to leonie or Old Toad)? Thanks!

Yes.  But you won't new able to edit, email or copy any of them to the Desktop without first downloading the full sized version from the iCloud library.

I have the same problem but I don't use iCloud Photo. I do have a Time Capsule with Time Machine backing up regularly. Have tried to repair the Photo library holding down Option and Command when opening, but I get further errors. Any suggestions?

Started a new Photo Library after the Repair function failed to work on both my existing photo library and a backup copied from my Time Machine prior to up grading to El Capitan. Old Toad's snarkless answer seems to work.

What I was trying to avoid, since I spent the last several months trying to sync my photo library with Photo Library cannot be avoided. My new Library was created, and started to download the new library from iCloud. Even though I did that months ago in preparation for this moment of Photos-El Capitain convergence, it's still broken. And Photos iCloud still *****. After how many years of Apple trying to get syncing right?

So close to closure.  My Photos app has spent the last 48 hours locked into "Uploading 4 items"

    Restart your Mac.

True, dat. But how virtuous must we be? Especially with all the time (and effort?) Apple has  supposedly taken to roll out this new Photos app replacement for Aperture/iPhoto? And El Capitan? I didn't like the first iteration of Photos when it first released, but decided to go with it and give it a try, It took weeks to get it right and working under Yosemite.  Now comes El Capitain, and it broke my photo library and the Repair function didn't fix it, resulting in building  whole new library and downloading the whole 20,000+ images yet again.

Fine, so be it, if that's what it takes to fix Apple's longstanding inability to handle syncing..

My patience is currently frozen on the last three "Downloading 3 Items" where it's been stuck for the last 72 hours despite restarts, pauses, etc,

I took a screenshot of it, added it to my Photos, and it took 30 minutes to upload the screenshot to my iCloud. Now back to Downloading those last 3 items without any clue as to what they are, Just waiting and burning through my patience. Please Apple... spend some of your dosh and get people or a company that knows how to handle syncing.

Photos is not and never was a replacement for Aperture.

I know that. I've moved on from there and tried it out. But whatever it is, it isn't working since El Capitain was released, EC broke my Photos library and the Repair option no longer works.

Closed and restarted dozens of times. No change. It should go without saying, that that option shouldn't be necessary, but I'm trying to be virtuous and giving Apple the bend the doubt.

    WWSJ do?

He too, realised Apple sucked at syncing, http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-jobs-mobileme-failure-2011-5.

Too bad he's not around anymore, to fix it.

I've had enough of your constant denigrating replies.

    Good luck, I'm out.

I guess he heard me. Or is he following this thread from upstairs. Finally, after 72 hours of "Downloading 3 items", it finished with a welcome: "Updated Just Now". Finally. 72 hours for 3 items? Hopefully, after all the patience I've had, things will get back to (the new) Apple normal.

Next issue-I have installed the latest version of Pixelmator. Supposedly, it is one of the newer apps that supports extensions for Photos. in System Preferences>Extensions I have enabled it. Within Photos clicking on the Share icon I have enabled it. in the Edit window when  I click a picture to edit it, at the bottom of the screen of choices, I click Extensions>More I am offered  version of the System Preferences menu which includes  pane named Photos which is not present on the main System Preferences>Extensions screen. This local (to Photos) Extensions pane says: "Photos-Not enabled" meaning extensions are not enabled even though they re listed and ticked in the other panes.

I've closed, restarted, both Photos and Pixelmator, rebooted. Uninstalled and re-downloaded Pixelmatr all to no avail. In Aperture, I could designate my editor of choice. No such obvious option in Photos.
