Q: ios 9 update battery drain problem

First, don't respond with general battery life advice!  After upgrade to ios 9 then 9.01, the battery life on my iphone 5s has been reduced dramatically.

This is not a settings issue as I verified all my previous settings are the same as before the update.  All location services and background app refreshes are off and were off prior to the update.

There is clearly a problem with the ios using more resources.  All the responses I have seen regarding this issue give the same general advice for conserving battery life. This is not a "settings" issue - update resulted in maybe 50-60% of the previous battery life.

Any fixes in the works?

From your post it looks like you contacted Apple somehow about this? And received that response, The number of people experiencing this issue is not critical"?

If so, can you share how did you contact them please? Maybe if we all bombard them.....  I have friends and relatives experiencing this power drain issue but they aren't participating in community forums and not contacting Apple.

    Thanks,

I know there are a lot of responses, but I'll respond to the first post so everyone sees it.

The problem has nothing to do directly with iOS 9, 9.0.1, or 9.0.2. What caused it is the process of updating, and it has happened to a few phones (yes, really a few) after every update that has ever been released. It can also happen spontaneously, but it is more noticeable after an update because it is natural to see the correlation as causation.

What causes it is an app (or apps, but usually only one) that was interrupted in the middle of doing something requiring sending or receiving data. If the app isn't properly coded to deal with this it keeps attempting to complete the send/receive, but fails every time. But it uses up processing time, battery, and sometimes data as it tries. To fix it the app must be identified and either killed, or, in some cases, deleted and reinstalled. Go to Settings/Battery, scroll to the bottom, and look at Usage and Standby. If they are exactly the same it is a real runaway app. If they are not the same, but Usage is much higher than your memory of how much you have used the phone it is an app running in background.

Next, read the list of apps and the amount of energy each has used. This should tell you which app you have to deal with.

There is one special case. If the app is Mail and you have a Microsoft Exchange account on the phone it is the Exchange account that is causing the problem. This is a bug in Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol. To fix it either delete the Exchange account, reboot the phone, and add it back, or turn off all of the switches for it in Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Reboot, then turn them back on.

These are the first, easy steps to resolve sudden battery drain. There are more, but try these first.

Make sure all you apps that have released updates have been updated since the 9.0.2 release.  I had about 2 days of 9.0.2 where the battery was draining and the phone was hot.  Then once after powering down fully, the phone went back to normal.  I noticed that several apps auto updated in the intervening time.  I believe there were apps that weren't playing well with iOS9 at first.  For more than a week everything has been "back to normal" for me.

I knew better from my years of iPhone experience but my IP6 with OS9.0 was not responding when alerts ring. Embarrassed me in meetings more then once.  Updated to OS9.0.2 last night, gave it a full change.  Used it 3 or 4 times, 1 call, 3 text.  I leave text running in the back but turn off everything else when not using. Battery is at 15% in 7 hours.  By analogy the heaviest consumer of the battery needs attention but in my case the Home & Lock Screen has used 81% with only 18 on screen.  Not sure what to do about that

I'm also having the same problem. My phone has the same time listed for usage and standby time, but my Home & Lock Screen is by far the biggest app. Since I can't uninstall that like you could an app as you suggested, would a reset and restore do the trick?  Any help would be appreciated.

That was the resolution which worked for me was a hard reset, Side Switch + Home key shut down and restart.  Hope this helps

The reset worked for me too, & I also turned off Wi-Fi Assist in Mobile Data, as I read somewhere that this can use a lot of battery power.  I think this is a newish function.  My iPhone is now back to working perfectly.

What have you done to try to fix it? How have you contacted Apple for help? Hint: This is a user to user forum; Apple does not participate here. To talk to Apple use the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page.

As with updates to most any computer updates, including hand held devices, you should always reboot.  In this case do a hard reset, Side Switch + Home key shut down and restart.

So Apple has a new release today - iOS 9.1    It looks like it might fix the issue I was having in calendar but nothing about battery drain.  Has anyone downloaded this yet to see if it fixes the battery drain?

BBattery drain rarely has anything to do with any iOS version. There is no battery drain problem with iOS 9. If you have a battery drain problem it is a misbehaving app. For example, Facebook said recently that they know there is a problem in the current version of the FB app that causes excessibe battery drain.

I hear you, but in this case: No.

My apps are under control: I've turned off notifications, turned off background app refresh, and checked every setting to make sure that they're not misbehaving.

On iOS 8, no problems--battery would often last at least a days with sporadic use. After upgrading to iOS9--nothing else changed--I can almost watch the battery percentage drain. If I leave my phone on overnight, it is totally drained when I wake up.

Sorry, if it was an iOS 9 problem you would see thousands of posts about it. You don't. There actually was a battery problem in an update 3 years ago, and there were over 20,000 posts about it in the 2 weeks before it was fixed. And that one affected only 5% of users at a time when there was only 1/5 the number of iOS devices. I have 4 devices on iOS 9, and none of them have battery issues. All of them have better battery life than they did on iOS 8. It is a problem with your phone or your apps, and if you wait for a global fix from Apple it will be a vey long wait.
