Hi davidfromascot,

I'm curious to know if your Hotmail settings have changed. Type your email address in at this site to confirm what the settings should be:

Mail Settings Lookup - Apple Support
https://www.apple.com/support/mail-settings-lookup/

Once you've confirmed the settings are correct, the next step would be to go online to the webmail for your Hotmail account and make sure you can log in there with your current email password. If so, delete the password in the account in Mail, enter the one you just confirmed, and then close the Mail settings window and quit Mail to test.

Hi davidfromascot,

Thanks for providing some additional information. So, do I understand that your Apple ID is your hotmail email address? Or, do you have a separate email that ends in @me.com or @mac.com?

If you are in the Mail application sending and receiving emails, you would use the same password that you use to access your web based mail for your hotmail account.

In all other instances, buying music from the iTunes Store, etc. you would use the password for your Apple ID account (which is your hotmail email address). You can verify the password you use for your Apple ID account at appleid.apple.com.

Hi Judy

Thanks for perservering! My Apple ID is not my hotmail address. I use my Apple ID as you suggest for Apps. etc. I have two email accounts, n old one .......@hotmail.co.uk and a new one when I bought this Mac, @me.com. I'm not very computer literate and I think the hotmail still handles the traffic (is that the correct term). I can still use my hotmail address for full communication, in and out, with the hotmail password but I don't want to go back to that as the @me.com address is more convenient. Everything working fine until I downloaded El Capitan - ugh! @me.com is fine for incoming mail but very time I try to send something I get the message "unable to verify account name or password". @me.com mail to my iPhone 5 works perfectly both in and out, "curioser and curioser said Alice". Sometimes computing is a wonderland, well to me anyway.

I'm having a similar issue. My Hotmail messages were slow to download in Mail, so I deleted my Hotmail account from Sys Prefs > Internet Accounts. However, when I went to add that account back it didn't work. I just keep getting the same message: "Unable to verify account name or password." I'm 100% sure I'm using the correct credentials--I can log into hotmail.com just fine. This is so annoying and started happening when I upgraded to El Capitan.

Are others have the same issue? Any advice?

I'm having the same issue. I upgraded to El Capitan. After the upgrade I noticed I couldn't send mail from my hotmail account through apple mail app. Upon discovering this, I deleted the hotmail account from internet accounts on my macpro. I then tried to add the hotmail account back to the mail app. I keep getting 'Unable to verify account name or password'. This is clearly a bug. I hope Apple fixes this bug. Usually I'm not inconvenienced by Apple products. This is an unfortunate case.

This gets sillier and sillier. There appears to be various problems connected with hotmail accounts and it affects accounts in different ways. I started this post and then found that by cancelling and reinstalling hotmail I could send mails from .me but the noticed that when I sent these mails the return address still showed .hotmail.co.uk so people replying, and not necessarily checking where the mail was going to, would automatically send to the hotmail account.

Come on Apple fix this bug. Is there any way I can junk El Capitan and go back to something that works like Yosemite?

I had this same problem when I upgraded one of my computers to El Capitan, I kept getting the response 'Unable to verify account name or password'. I have two hotmail accounts and apple mail would accept the password on one account but not the other. Both passwords worked on apple mail on my Yosemite computer and my iPad and phone and also on safari. After changing my password multiple times, I tried a shorter password (14 alphanumeric instead of 18 alphanumeric). It finally accepted the password.

Maybe, El Capitan mail doesn't like long passwords.

Hope it works for you

I upgraded to El Capitan and then lost (or so I thought) ALL my folders in my hotmail / mail. My 'JUNK' would not load and my 'DRAFTS' kept vacillating from 1000+ drafts to just 1. IT also took the liberty of DELETING one of my drafts - of course, it was the one I needed. SO, I FINALLY deleted that hotmail account as suggested here (after 2 hours of researching and not finding the answer!) and whaddaya know ! My folders and junk and everything is back. WHEW! I CONCUR, why can't Apple get it right? Unless it's just a coincidence & not a consequence of updating to El Capitan. I'm not computer savvy enough to know but this solution worked so I'm a happy ignorant macbook pro owner.

Hi,

Go to the Hotmail page in your browser, Click your name in the right hand top corner of the Hotmail page, Select Account settings.

In the new window that opens select the Security & Privacy tab. Click the More Security Settings link. Scroll down to App passwords.

Click the Create a new App password link and use the password it generates. You are all good to go after that!
