Q: Why doesn't Mail cooperate with Split View?

I've just upgraded to 10.11 on a Late 2013 MacBook Pro 13" 2.8 Core i7. I'm having trouble getting mail to shrink to fit one of the frames in Split View. I have tried combining it with several different Apps that are supported under split view (Safari, Messages, etc.). When I stack the Apps, Mail seems to stay Full Screen and the other app (in my example below, Safari) sits on top of half of the full size mail window. If I click on the Mail window, it hides the Safari pane behind the Full Screen Mail view and there is no way to bring it back into view but to close Split View or to use Command-Tab. In the Case of Command-Tab, the screen returns to the view seen in my screenshot.

Please see this screenshot for reference.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior? In my testing so far, it seems to be unique to Mail.

I’ve been having no problem with split view. I generally already have one application in full screen and want to add a second so I’ll move to the desktop that has the application window I want to add. Then I’ll invoke Mission Control with the F3 keypress and drag the second application into the fullscreen window. And that gives me:

Thanks for your input. I tried your suggestion but sadly got the same result. However, out of frustration I decided to restart my computer for a second time in this troubleshooting process, and for some inexplicable reason, it now works properly. So the answer seems to be that two restarts solved my issue. I wish I had taken the time to try the second restart before posting!
