I upgraded to OSX 10.11 El Capitan. Mail now crashes immediately upon launch. I have very large collection of old mail on my mac. I have three active email accounts. I am on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014).

look if you have one inkompatible Mailplugin, i have one inkompatible GPGMail Plugin und Mail crash every time,
after install Plugin Update, Mail run okay.
Same problem. I don't see that plug in, but not sure where I would find it??
I don't believe I have any plugins. But I do have the Mail folder in a non-standard location.
You can try the steps in the below article to find Mail plugins that you may have installed:

This article may also be helpful in trying to resolve the issue with your Mail app quitting unexpectedly:
Neither of those folders exists on my mac. My Mail folder is in a non-standard location, pointed to by an alias in the usual ~/Library folder.
Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.
Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Did both - neither helped. Crashes instantly 😟
I found that GPGMail extension installed was incompatible with El Capitan.
I located the root /Library/Mail/Bundles directory (the System Library not the user Library) and deleted the GPG bundle.
Now I can run Mail without issue on El Capitan. Thought it would be too simple a problem to rectify but it worked as soon as Mail was fired up.
The Last Version GPGMail extension was compatible with El Capitan .😉
Found Virtru (https://www.virtru.com/) and deleted this - now mail works!!

With the help of an AppleCare person, my problem was solved by deleting a number of old inactive email accounts. Go to System Preferences, select Internet accounts, select inactive account name, click minus sign.
