I lost my @icloud email alias in El Capitan

I use my @icloud.com email address for most of my activity. However, when I updated my Mac to OS X El Capitan, I lost it. It now uses my @me.com address and will not accept me adding my @icloud.com address as an alternative. My iOS devices give me the ability to use either @icloud.com or @me.com addresses but not El Capitan. How do I correct this situation.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Hi KJTemplin,

I'm sorry to hear you have been having this issue with the El Capitan upgrade. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the nature of the issue you are describing, in particular if you are talking about a primary email account under @icloud.com/@me.com (which should all be treated essentially the same), or one or more actual email aliases, which are slightly different. For more information, particularly regarding potential issues with transitioning aliases, you may find the following articles helpful:

Thanks for the feedback. I may have used the wrong term when I choose the term alias. What I should have said was before I converted to El Capitan, I was able to use my @icloud.com email as the sent from address. I had my choice of using it (@icloud.com) or my @me.com or a @gmail.com address. I chose the @icloud.com address. Maybe it was an alias I was using and did not realize it. After installing El Capitan, my only option is to use my @me.com or the @gmail.com email address as the sent from address.

After reading the links you sent me I understand better the rationale for the aliases but now I am getting people asking me if my email address has changed from @icloud.com to @me.com? I know the answer of course (use either) but my question remains. How can I get back to using my @icloud.com as my sent from email address.

Thanks for your help.

In addition to my note above left earlier today, I recently tried to add my @icloud.com address to the Mail-Preferences-Accounts settings under email address and the dialog box would not close after I tried to save the changes. To get our of the dialog, I need to close out of the Mail App completely which does not save the change I wanted. I now believe this is the root cause of not having my @icloud.com email address displayed as my From address.

Thanks again for your help.

I encountered exactly the same issues -- but for me signing out of icloud and signing back in did not resolve. The aliases are now correctly displayed in mail.app - however in compose mail views, none of the aliases are selectable as they should be -- eg I can't choose to send from any of my aliases other than the @me.com address ...

<update> -- restarting mail.app again seems to have resolved this ... So for me the total fix was: (1) sign out of icloud (2) sign back into icloud (3) still have an issue with mail compose windows -- until mail.app was shut down and opened again

Not sure if I had shut down mail.app after step (2) above, but I think I did ...
