Volume plummets for no reason - iPod shuffle

My 4th gen shuffle loses volume without warning. Sometimes it works without a problem for 30 min and then the volume goes down, sometimes it happens right away... it's totally unpredictable. Any ideas how to fix this? I've found some stuff for the nano online with a similar problem, but no fixes for the shuffle.
