Q: apple mail crashes after OSX 10.11

Just upgraded to OSX 10.11

After the upgrade I was prompted that the system had to "import" mail.

After a long wait it finished and now Apple Mail crashes a few seconds after you open it.

Any suggestions ?

My email crash appears to be related to gMail.  If I disable my gMail account but keep all other email accounts active, Apple Mail does not crash.   If I then re-activate my gMail account, Apple Mail stays up and works properly ... then later it starts crashing again.

    Any ideas ?

    I have the same issue.

I did a clean install and Mail is crashing. The settings were automatically restored by apples keychain.

I used all beta's of El Capitan and no issues. This was an upgrade of Yosemite, so probably there was a change in the default settings, which is the reason Mail is crashing.

Having the same issue.  Mail crashes after a few seconds.  I've also tried initiating email from other apps (calendar, safari) - same problem.

OK, I seem to have fixed the Mail app crash issue.  It's seems to have been related to the fact that I have multiple email accounts active in the app, as many people do.  The initial download of all messages from all accounts seemed to be overloading the app, causing it to crash.  See if this works for you:

    1. Before opening the Mail app, turn off your wifi connection (prevents mail from trying to download mailboxes from all accounts at once).

    2. Launch Mail app and go to Mail -> Preference -> Accounts tab.

    3. Click each of your accounts on the left side of the Accounts window, then uncheck the box next to "Enable this account."  Disable all of your mail accounts.

    4. Close Preference and close the Mail app.

    5. Relaunch the mail app and reconnect to wifi.

    6. Go back to Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts tab, and enable the first account.  Give the app plenty of time to download all messages until you no longer see "Checking for Mail..." at the bottom left of the app screen (may take a few minutes depending on how many messages you have on the server).

    7. Once the app is no longer "Checking for Mail..." repeat this server for each of your other accounts.  I saved Gmail until last since it's my biggest, which took the longest - about 5 minutes (I use multiple Gmail accounts).

After enabling all accounts, the crash issue stopped for me.  Hope it works for you!

I only have one account, which means your problem solving isn't working for me.

However i might found a more general solution, as your points do make sense.

The issues seems to be related to indeed too many emails in one go.

Go to your gmail in a webbrowser.

Go to your settings (right top)

    -Settings

-go to the tab: forward and IMAP

There you find an option to lower down your IMAP message in IMAP Folders. I have lowered it down to a 1000 and for an hour or so, no crashes....

I will start using a 1000, 2000, 5000 and than 10.000 and once that is done, I will set it to the default settings.

I will adjust my message if this is not the solution.

I just tried this.  Via a browser I set my gMail  IMAP folder limit to 1000 and saved the setting.

Apple Mail still crashed several seconds after I started it up.

I again checked to see that gMail was causing the problem by disabling my gMail account in Apple System Preferences, Internet Accounts.

When gMail is disabled the Apple Mail does not crash.

Then I went back to the browser and reset the gMail IMAP setting to "Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder .."

I re-enabled my gMail account in Apple System Preferences and then started Apple Mail. It did not crash. It began bringing in several thousand messages from gMail and completed without crashing.

Then I quit Apple mail (via MAIL, QUIT in the app) and when it quit I got the same Apple dialog box "Mail quit unexpectedly" that you get when it crashes.

I then restarted Apple mail and after a few seconds it crashed again.

So..I'm still not able to keep Apple Mail from crashing when my gMail account is enabled.

The problem started after installing OS-X 10.11

I may have solved my eMail problem.

I just deleted the gMail email account from my Mac via Settings, Internet Accounts.  Then I added the account back in from the same window.

I noticed that before I deleted the gMail account, my Apple email had a "Spam" folder under "Google" on the sidebar .... after adding the gMail account back in that Spam folder is no longer in the Apple Mail sidebar.

So far Apple Mail has not crashed since I added the account back in.  Perhaps that Spam folder had some nasty stuff in it.

This solution saved the day for me.  I also disconnected my ethernet cord when I disconnected wifi. Thanks for sharing this solution!

Thanks!! Worked well for me. Some mailboxes took more than 30 minutes to download all mail.

My Apple Mail crashes only when I try to "Reply" to an email. Crashed immediately. However, this did not start until yesterday and worked fine for quite some time after installing El Capitan

Having exactly the same problem. Hit reply and it crashes. If I do it enough times the entire system crashes and restarts. Then I am able to reply to the message I wanted to reply to originally. It is doing my head in.

Had exactly the same problem, Mail shutdown instantly every time I hot reply but worked fine in all other respects.

Was solved with a call to apple support.

    1.     Close all apps

    2.     Restart holding down the LHS shift key.

    3.     Login as usual (you have now done a 'safe' boot).

    4.     Restart will have taken a lot longer than usual and also you may have odd screen jitters in startup - this is usual.

    5.     Open Mail - and try to reply - mine worked immediately.

    6.     Shutdown and restart all over again so it boots up in normal mode.

    7.     Checked mail again and problem had gone permanently.

Needless to say all software was updated and I am running El Capitan.
