El Capitan Mail - Syncing with Gmail

I updated my MacBook Air to El Capitan today. I've used Gmail for a long time, and always access it through the Mac's Mail app. A strange thing started happening with El Capitan: it downloads each e-mail twice, about 20 seconds apart. The first time it puts it in my inbox, and also places a notice in Archive. Then it downloads it a second time. I get two alerts, one for each download. How do I stop this unnecessary redundancy?

Speaking of Archive, what's the point of this? I've never used it. It has three subfolders: On My Mac, one for my Gmail address, and a third one with an identical name as the first subfolder. All of my mail goes into the Gmail address Archive folder. Not certain why, what should I do about these extra folders, or even why I should care.

I also had a similar problem with the Mac Mail app unable to connect to Gmail after upgrading to El Capitan.

Upon upgrading I had thousands of old emails flood in. I deleted all, but don't do this as it also wipes them from your iPhone etc!

The Mail app would stay open (I notice other users have reported Mail constantly quits - this did't happen to me) - but Mail would not connect to Gmail and requested I enter my password. Despite entering a correct password, Mail app would display "unable to verify ..."

I tried this solution and all has returned to normal:

Open System Preferences, selected 'Internet Accounts' and delete your Gmail accounts.

Then choose 'Google" from the list on the right hand side of the System Preferences window (it shows iCloud, Exchange, Google, Twitter etc.)

You will be prompted to re-enter your email address and password - then the Mail app resumes working.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Leslie! The tip about the IMAC account was what did it. Turns out El Capital did the same to me: I have a Gmail POP account already, but El Capitan replicated it with an IMAP account, so now I had two. I simply unchecked the "Enable this account" box in the IMAP account under Accounts in Mail Preferences, and now things are back to normal. No double downloading documents anymore.
