how long does it take to install el capitan?

I am trying to install el capitan. Download has gone OK. But after I started the installation and after the first re-start, I just have a blank screen with the cursor. This has been the state for the last 2 hours. Is this what I should expect?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Hi!

After several attempts (differents ways with different devices) to install OS X El Capitan in my new SSD, i gave up. I was convinced that was performing something wrong, or it was something wrong with my hardware.

So... I start again with an old version of OS X (Lion)

My Installation environment is:

1 - MacBook Pro mid 2009

2 - CPU 2,26 GHz (x2)

3 - RAM 8 GB

4 - Original HDD 160 GB (that i swapped with the optical drive (i don't remember the last time that i used)(Note 1: not important for the installation. Note 2: It's running OS X El Capitan.)

5 - SSD 240 GB, trion 100

6 - USB 32 GB, 2.0 Kingston

I installed a new SSD (#5 above) in the place of the original HDD.

My goal is to make a clean installation of the OS X in the new SSD.

Step 1: Download the OS X Lion from app store (Duration: approx. 1,5 hours) (seems normal)

Step 2: Create a bootable USB pen (#6 above) with the OS X Lion

Step 3: Reboot the computer and starts the installation process from the USB drive.

Step 3a: Until the moment of the OS X really starts the installation everything runs more or less in an acceptable time frame (between the start of the installation, running the disk utility and OS X installation preparation it was consumed about 1 hour).

Step 4: The installation starts with a estimated time of 23 minutes at approx. Feb, 12 22:00 hours). At this moment almost 24 hours after the start, i see in the screen an estimated time of 13 minutes and in the installation log i checked that is in progress the extracting of BSD.pkg (Note 1: for instance the same operation for the Essentials.pkg took about 11 hours!!!)

This is the status report of my adventure... This time i will not give up...let's see...

Who can explain me what is wrong with this slow slow slow process.

I have to apologize to everyone

I canceled the previous installation, swap the SSD disk for a new one (from Crucial) and "voliá" the installation process took only 10 minutes.

Now my MacBook Pro mid 2009 flies like a new one...

Conclusion: If you have problems with a slow installation on a SSD disk, maybe the problem is with the disk itself and not with the computer or with the OS X (damage, incompatible..)

Good night!

I am highly disheartened. I JUST bought my first ever MacBook on Saturday. Today I come home from work and turn it on and soon as I finish keying in my password there is a progress bar which shows about 50% and a few seconds later my screen goes black except every thirty seconds or so the little white flower thingy on the center bottom blinks and disappears.

Someone one please tell me I'm being impatien and it's just installing the update and not stuck or something.

This is extremely slow and odd process to update where it seems more like it is having issues than it is doing what it is supposed to be doing.

This is a brand new two day old computer for goodness sakes!

my El Capitan update is now running 5 hours. Downloading took around 2 hours and it's been showing the apple icon for more than 2 hours now and the screen at 16 minutes remaining. I have a Macbook (early 2009) with OS X10.7.5. I thought this was the slowest update I ever encountered until I read the 15hours update. Hang in there.

Updating in 2016!! Better late than never right? lol

Best Answer I got - from macworld.co.uk - power off the mac mini. disconnect time machine etc ...

leave basics - KVM, internet, speakers. power back on.

it should come back - mine did - to the place where it was when you powered it off. 5 minutes later - actually a tense 5 minutes - I saw those great mountain peaks - El Capitan - slightly out of focus - probably Apple's way of saying not quite done yet ...

this is excerpted from that blog ...

"

... moving from OS X Yosemite to El Capitan ... progress seems to halt ... a stuck progress bar or, even worse, with a blank grey screen.

Sooner or later you'll find an update gets interrupted. The first time your Mac doesn't finish installing an update can be a bit harrowing ... After all, you think ... interrupting a Mac when it's updating would be a disaster.

Its expected that an upgrade process may be interrupted due to a power shortcut ...

Mac OS X is an extremely robust operating system ... chances of the installation going wrong are slim.

We've pulled the plug on a Mac several times during a Software Update - even during the upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan and it bounces back just fine and completes the installation ...

If you were installing an app from the App Store, then open the App Store and click Updates. You should find that the update/installation process carries on.

If you were installing an OS X update, you should find Mac OS X picks back up where it left off and continues.

Hey. I have a similar issue with ny MacBook pro late 2008. I am upgrading the hd and I found instructions online to hold command+r at boot to enter OSX utilities. Did that ok, hard drive had already been formatted so I just needed to reinstall OS X. Now I'm staring at a blank screen after clicking reinstall. There's nothing on this hard drive so I guess it'd be ok if something should happen. I'm more worried about losing data from my old hd since I didn't back up (eek!). Not a noob when it comes to fixing macs, updated many things- swapped the unibody casing (mine was bent), replaced the LCD glass, repaired MagSafe adapters, etc but I didn't have the patience to wait for time machine to backup. 7 hours! Thanks for your input.
