    Yep. Worked for me, too.

    Once.

Restart iMac and hold buttons cmd+alt+R+P when you hear the startup sound again and logo computer.   Then everything loads properly and there is no longer any problem with any card.

I have tried this and it did NOT work for me. When I run a hardware diagnostic on startup (hold D I believe) the Mac does find hardware error with the SD. I'm so thrilled to have to make the 200 mile round trip to the nearest Apple Store I can't begin to tell you...

Yeah, we all know by now: reset PRAM. It might have worked for you. It might have worked for some others. But it didn't work for me and some others.

I could read the card, but then it disappears and I get the warning about unmounting it properly. After that I can no longer recognize the card. And it's not just the internal SD card reader. I attached a USB card reader and the Mac won't see that, either. Any card, any reader.

Please don't post the "Reset PRAM" instructions again. I'm infuriated enough as it is. I used to have these kinds of problems with my Windows machine.

I have a late 2009 imac and was having the same problem with the SD card not being recognized.

Did the NVRAM reset and now the card works, lets see for how long...

Yep.. posted too soon, while importing pictures to the Photos app the card ejected itsefl with the message "The disk was not properly ejected" and the import failed.

And the card reader is not working again .

Just as is happening with Necr0n99.

I have an iMac and experienced the same problem.

As suggested I reset the SMC & PRAM-no luck.

I tried leaving the SD card in the slot and re-booting. That worked and the

SD icon appeared. However it seems that if it is a different day when i insert the

SD card I have to reboot to get it to recognize the card.

Not happy with this, but it's a temporary fix for me.

I do have the same issue as well. After restart the CD card is recognized, then it gets lost after a while. Only rebooting solves. Already tried PRAM and SMC but this did not solve the issue sustainably.

It would seem that quite a few people might have this problem.

    1. Is Apple aware of it?
    2. If not, how do we file a problem report?

    Does anyone know?

I have tried all the suggestions posted and the problem kept recurring. I got Apple support to talk me through a reinstallation of El Capitan but that too caused the reader to fail after the first initial success. The problem has now been escalated to Apple senior engineers and I am awaiting a call back sometime later this week with their suggestions. Incidentally, they claim my problem is an isolated one so the more people that call Apple support (through the support website) the better as it clearly isn't.

Downloaded El Capitan 10.11 on my late 2009 iMac and my sd card doesn't show up on the desktop or in iPhoto unless I shut down, and press Control-Option-P-R on startup to reset PRAM.  I don't even know what PRAM is and don't want to have to restart daily.  Anyone have a solution for me?

If you've read this entire thread, you'll find that for most of us there is no solution. The PRAM and SMC procedures seem to work for some. I suspect for most is does not. The only think we can do is let Apple know about the problem and pray for a fix in the future. Because it needs (nay, begs) to be fixed.

I'll throw in my lack of solution. Apple user from the very start, I'm disappointed.

    Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz i5, 8GB, SSDs, OS X 10.11.1

Tried the various suggestions in this thread, nothing has worked.
