Do NOT use a POP3 email account with El Capitan

After 4 hours on the phone with both Earthlink and Apple I now know what the problem is. OS 10.11 - EL Capitan - has an email program - MAIL - that will not connect to POP3 email accounts. By default MAIL will attempt to create an IMAP account.

In the end, my solution was to change my 15-year old Earthlink.net POP3 email account to an IMAP account. There is no know workaround for this problem.

POP3 is obsolete -- like modems and CDs --- move on and change your POP3 account to an IMAP account .... Apple has spoken !!!!!!!

Thanks Richard. I had a Gmail Pop3 account that stopped working on El Capitan when I upgraded this morning. This how I got it all working as an iMAP account in Mail...

1) As a precaution, archive the emails that are in your Gmail Pop account's inbox and sent items.

Note: I set up two new folders in Mail under 'On My Mac', and dragged my emails into these folders.

2) In Mail Preferences, disable the Gmail Pop account, then delete it.

Note: To delete the account, in the left pane, select the your Gmail Pop account, then at the bottom of the pane press –

3) On the Mail menu, select 'Accounts...'

Result: The Internet Accounts window is displayed.

4) In the left pane of the 'Internet Accounts' window, select the relevant account.

5) In the right pane, deselect (un-tick) 'Mail'.

4) In the right pane, select (tick) 'Mail'.

Result: New Inbox and Sent Items folders are automatically created for your Gmail account in Mail and populated with your emails from the server.

Note: Step 1 may not be necessary, given that the newly created inbox and sent items folders are automatically populated from the Gmail server. Perhaps someone else can advise whether archiving is wise.

I deleted and recreated from the accounts from scratch, unchecked and rechecked and the pop accounts are still not working. I have had these accounts for over 7 YEARS!!! and not a problem till I upgraded to El Capitan. My accounts are domain accounts with Go Daddy and they are checking out fine on their end. Is El Capitan by design trying to disable POP accounts? Go Daddy says that someday pop accounts will go away, but that is not soon. Is Apple trying to force the Issue? We just need this fixed. It is affecting the entire Office.

To get more options on creating accounts, select add new account and choose Other for type. Enter your name and password on the first screen incorrectly in either 1 or both fields. You can type any character in each field which will enable the box to continue to the next screen. The failure will bring up a window that will let choose the type of account to create. Fill in the information for all the fields for your pop account. You will need to know the information before hand such as server name, port number, SSL or not, Outgoing server name, etc.

Since your account will be the same login as the IMAP, you will need to disable or delete the IMAP versions from the accounts list.

Sorry to hear that. After much frustration and asking the same questions, I changed the Gmail POP3 account to a Gmail IMAP account, which is what my instructions describe.

I have POP3 accounts (not Gmail accounts) on another Mac, and for this reason I have not upgraded that Mac to El Capitan. I may try out Glenn's suggestion on that computer when I upgrade it, but I suspect that future Mail upgrades may mess it all up again. If you try Glenn's approach and it works for you, please let us know.

It seems that the El Capitan version of Mail may get confused when it's being asked to check both IMAP and POP accounts. I tried the check-box routine described by others for all my POP3 accounts, but it got me nowhere. Then I noticed that I had one IMAP (iCloud) account that I didn't remember installing and that I don't typically use. (I think Apple ID builds it -- and turns it on -- automatically.) I turned it off in Accounts and suddenly everything worked as smoothly as it did before. Additionally, Mail on my smaller Apple devices (iOS 9.1) had been sluggish and unreliable since the last upgrade, but after removing the IMAP connections from Accounts on my Mac, everything works fine again.

So check your Accounts and see if you have a mixture of POP and IMAP accounts. It may be that Mail will check either just fine, but not both. I hope this is helpful to others.

thank you gtrmanla - solved my issue. Been calling godaddy and messing around on other threads for the last few days. That was the fix.

Btw- talked to two different godaddy people today who said El Capitan is incompatible with POP accounts. I asked why it worked for a month then just stopped two days ago, on three different computers (without any previous updates being applied) and they tried to lay it in my lap.. They told me the only way to fix it was to upgrade all my email accounts to their annual ($100) IMAP accounts. F them. Done with their scripted, upselling nonsense.

Anyone have a suggestion for someone reasonable priced and solid to host my 7 websites?
