Boot up after installing El Capitan

HI,

I've got stuck with white screen with Apple logo and empty progress bar underneath after installation of El Capitan. Booting up in safe mode gives the same result. I've made schoolboy error- trusted and did not back up system with time machine. Any help highly appreciated. Thank you.

Boot OS X Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. Choose "Reinstall Mac OS X". That ought to reinstall El Cap and not your previously installed OS. See how far you get.

hi,

this solved the boot up issue after EC install.

Posted by TSOPA from Reboot fail after installing El Capitan help!!

Thank You so much.

I did exactly as you suggests, and it worked perfectly.

I was very innovative and I tried to make a First Aid Utility disk just after your commands; and guess what?, Could not be done. ERROR!!

But once it showed me the error, I did quit Disk Utility, did restart, and then the blue sky appears over my head. Dark clouds just pass by.

Thanks again, and again, and again....

Using Terminal Command I was able to find the 3rd party kext files. Found and removed Eltima through an uninstall. Two other 3rd party kexts I've identified but can't seem to remove:

rabb.it.driver.RabbitEars

Cycling74.driver.Soundflower

Can't seem to remove these, but will try again later. Any sense of whether these could also be creating the conflict for El Capitan install? Eager to get this resolved so that I can upgrade to El Capitan in prep for getting the rumored iMac 21.5 Retina.

Thanks!

Hi Seth,

I ran your command in the terminal and got this (had to remove "/Volumes/your-volume-name" for it to take). Any ideas on what this means?

Thanks in advance,

Jon

After running the command for the /Library/Extensions folder (not under System), it appears that there are a whole host of issues. I think I will wait for Apple to push a fix.

Mine is MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011, and I have Mac 2011 Office upgraded to 14.5.7, and other applications including Safari browser (I have no other browser) upgraded by clicking the installed applications and checking their websites one by one. I checked to ensure no more Apple Store upgrade.

I also have FireVault off.

But after installed El Capitan, at the first boot up after first power shut down, I still got the same problem of grey screen with no progress in progress bar.

Apple Store could not solve the problem except asked me either to clean install or to wait for El Capitan patches or other applications upgrade gradually.

I tried to boot up in Startup Manager (Option + Power on) but after I selected my only hard disk, it did not work to boot into El Capitan.

Today I tried again to boot up in Command R to look for any more clues.

After choosing language, in the next screen, I clicked the top left Apple logo to bring up Startup Disk.

In the screen shown, I selected my only hard disk shown once, then I clicked the top left menu to Quit Startup Disk.

It took a short while before the top menu changed to show Language Chooser.

I clicked Shut Down instead.

After a few minutes, I boot up the Macbook normally and it could log into El Capitan and now everything is smooth.

As there is no file to remove or no tweaks or terminal command to make, see if others have similar issue can try your luck this way.

Same "feature" as the rest, mid 2010 mac pro, upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan: Boot fail @ Apple logo and 0% progress with the addition of not being able to boot into safe mode- only recovery mode.

2 re-installs of OSX with identical failure after restart.

One search found hints that old apps / non-responsive not working under Yosemite could cause problems. In my instance this was an older version of a Samsung program: SideSync. After a problematic uninstall, I managed to remove the app, and to my surprise had a successful reboot.

I also tried to remove the EltimaAsync.kext from terminal as proposed by users on these forums, however stopped after the initial permission denied message.

On Eltima^s own page i found a uninstall.apk. After downloading and running the full install inkl successful reboot, the kext seems to be gone in the extension list.

Still crossing fingers but have now had 4 full reboots and still all good and system seems more responsive.

In short: uninstall crashing/ non responsive apps and also use of manufacturers uninstall programs seems to do the trick.

Hopefully Apple will also release a patch to do a proper clean of the system. Crazy that a small incompatible issue will cause so much harm.

I'm having the same issues with El Capitan.

I have the MacBook Pro Retina 2012.

Originally installed the GM preview of El Capitan - upgrade. Installed fine and ran fine. However after first reboot - would not restart. Progress bar hangs with Apple Logo.

Tried a clean install with app store version. Rebooted fine. Then migrated just my data - and only data - no apps. Tested a reboot - stuck again.

I've now gone back to Yosemite - and staying there - may not be as "snappy" - but at least it reboots.

Looks like I'll be giving El Capitan a miss. I don't have time to keep installing new OS's only to have to go back to my backups.

Oct 20, 2015 6:39 AM in response to Stuart1

100% agree with you. I have exactly the same issue. A clean install of El Capitan seems to work fine. But as soon as I migrate just my data - it corrupts and will not reboot.

It has ocurred to me to not do a migration from Time Machine, and just copy my data across, and then clean install all apps. I would do this if there was some guarantee that it would work. But I just don't have the time. And its too risky - that as soon as I re-install an app that it doesn't like, it will get stuck again.

Oh and an OS reinstall works as well - but it still will not reboot after it has reinstalled fine.

I'm also back with Yosemite - and staying there - I've wasted enough valuable time in trying to upgrade to El Capitan.

If Yosemite can work fine with my setup - why can't El Capitan.

The code I posted before your response, did you try that yet?

I have the same issues on two different Mac's. I spent severals hours on the phone with Apple Support and also made an appointment at the Genuis Bars. He run severals tests on the Mac, he couldn't fix it by himself. He said, to restore to Yosemite and manually transfer the data over, or use an old Time Machine Backup that was made on Yosemite.

Then I booted in recovery mode went into Terminal and first used that code: /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Extensions

To make sure that I have there correct name and after that I insert, the code above I wrote. If Macintosh HD isn't your the name, use the one according to your hard drive. Even if it returns instantly what the files or something couldn't be found, it somehow still works, after that run the First Aid on the Harddrive and then restart. That will let you boot in.

Then go into System Prefenceres, Users and delete everything in Login Items. Same in /System/Library, delete the Login Agents and LoginDemons. Just everything that may prevent the Mac from starting, usually old softwares, such as CCleaner can prevent it.

Finally had the opportunity to download el Capitan and experienced many of the same issues reported here. On boot sequence following "successful" install, my mid-2009 MBP hung up around 90%. Multiple restarts were unsuccessful. Was able to slowly perform a "safe boot", but it took forever. Luckily, I performed a back up right before I began the upgrade so I restored to Yosemite. This problem is unacceptable. I miss the days when new Apple products and software "just worked" and worked well.

Reading through this thread, it appears as though some good advice is given that has worked. But, the user should not have to delve into the system like this to make a new install work.

Oct 20, 2015 11:38 AM in response to Deoxyribonucleic

After my first difficult upgrade on my 2009 MacBook Pro, in which a PRAM flash fixed it, I've performed successful upgrades on a 2010 MacBook Air, a 2012 iMac, a 2013 MacBook Pro (took 25 minutes with an internal ssd), and a 2009 MacBook. I clocked the last one as taking a little over an hour (despite the on screen timer stating 30 minutes.)

One thing I noticed on all of the upgrades was how the process appeared to stall with the install meter stuck at 80% or so under the grey apple logo. There was no timer underneath. Just a stuck meter. After waiting a long time, despite my inner urges to interrupt the process and proclaim that it was frozen, the screen flashed and the meter continued with a timer popping back up on its own and the install completed.

Just sharing my experiences... all of which have been upgrades and none of which have required the removal of any KEXTs.

Boot up after installing El Capitan
