Hi,

I will restate things another way.

The process is based on how iMessages came to be on the Mac and the iPhone.

PHONE

Enable Messages on the iPhone in Settings > Messages.

The number should then Verify and this will take some minutes on occasion.

Once that is does the iPhone can send iMessages from the iPhone number to other iPhones and Apple IDs that are registered with iMessages.

MAC

Go to the Mac and launch Messages.

Go to the Preferences > Accounts

Add an Apple ID that is iCloud valid to the iMessages set up.

The Mac can now send iMessages from the Apple ID to iPhone Numbers and Apple IDs registered with iMessages.

you can "test" by starting a New Message and entering your iPhone Number manually in the "To" spot.

You can then send an iMessages to the iPhone.

You can reply to the Mac from the iPhone.

LINKING BOTH

Now go back to the Settings on the iPhone for Messages and in Send and Receive add the Apple ID

This will cause Pop Up on the Mac saying what the iPhone is using.

Accept this and the iPhone Number is added to the "Receive" Alternatives listed under the Apple ID on the Mac version.

A Drop Down for "Start Conversations From " is also displayed on the Mac.

Choose how you want to connect to your Contacts:-

Do they know your Apple ID and iPhone Number ?

Do you mind if they know both ?

Set "Send From" on both devices.

Hi,

Double check the iPhone itself.

Settings > Messages > Send and Receive section.

This should list the iPhone number in greyed out form and with a Tick (the tick is placed there when you Enable the Messages app). Other than that you cannot change it.

However I have had instances where the number has become Unticked.

In this case the iPhone Number can become de-registered with the server and drop off the Mac versions settings.

If this is the case for your I solved it by Signing out of the Apple ID in Send and Receive.

I then placed the iPhone in Airplane Mode for a few mins.

On going back to the setting I enabled the Messages app and waited for the Number to Verify.

I actually tested at that point to the Apple ID that was only on the Mac and returned the iMessages (Apple ID to iPhone Number).

With that working I added back the Apple ID to the iPhone in the Messages settings (Send and Receive).

this causes the pop ups on the Mac to appear to say what the iPhone is Using.

Accepting the Pop up adds the iPhone Number as a "Received At" ID on the Mac version and creates the "Start Conversations From" drop down.
