I understand that you are running into issues with your web browser being out of date and are needing to have a more up to date browser. Let's see if we can clear this up for you
Using Google Chrome or other 3rd party browsers as alternatives is one way to go if you are getting prompts that you need a more up to date browser. If you like using Safari and prefer to use that over the 3rd party options, you can update your iMac to OS X Lion if it meets the system requirements. Take a look at the links below for those system requirements and link to purchase OS X Lion.

Oct 2, 2015 6:38 AM in response to janicem10by Allan Jones,Chrome and the many Google "extras" that get installed with it really stress older Macs with slow processors and limited max RAM capacity. IMHO you will be better of with FireFox.

Oct 2, 2015 6:40 AM in response to janicem10by Eric Root,Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
- iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
- OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
- 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
- 8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
Applications Compatibility (2)
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
If you want to stay with 10.6, try Firefox which is still being updated.
