Q: No mobile service after iOS 9.0.2 update

Hi all,

Even with the iOS 9 and 9.0.1 updates, my iPhone 6 (128 GB) was running smoothly. I was after updating to iOS 9.0.2 that a couple of weird things happened:

1. My cellular network has been replaced with "Searching..." and it does not appear in the "Network" field when I go to Settings > General > About. "Carrier Settings" does not even appear in "Settings" either. As a result, I can't use mobile services at all. Troubleshooting that I have done include:

- Removing the SIM card tray and checking for obstructions/physical damage. I even used another validly working SIM card and it still wasn't recognized.

- Following all the steps outlined here: If you can't connect to a cellular network or cellular data - Apple Support. Note that there are no issues with my mobile carrier's network, or my account.

2. Very minor, but when my phone appeared on iTunes, it was only identified as "iPhone" and not by the custom nickname I assigned it (let's say, "My iPhone"). - Very easily fixed on iTunes, but from past experience, I have never had to re-assign my custom iPhone name when I upgrade firmware -- so maybe that relates to another problem with the 9.0.2 update?

Short of doing a factory restore, or waiting for the next update, is there a way to resolve the mobile service problem?

Thanks!

Jay

My iPhone 6 lost cellular connectivity after the upgrade to iOS 9.0.2. I tried all ways of resetting and restoring the phone with no success. I believe the issue is that the upgrade somehow physically damages the antenna. My phone had to be replaced.

    Thanks for everyone's responses!

Resetting the mobile network (not right away, but after a few days after the problem first showed) did resolve the problem. But even then the solution was at best temporary, because every once in a while my mobile network would return to "No Service" which is annoying.

I still haven't done a factory restore, and I don't intend to do so until perhaps Apple releases a new version of iOS 9.

I have an iPhone 6 plus.  Had same problem after installing 9.0.2.  Reloaded iOS 6 times in 3 days to recover service. Several calls to Apple and AT&T. Finally went yesterday to at&t store. They replaced my SIM. I have not had another issue since then. Go replace SIM.

I too had a similar type of problem with my iPhone 5s, but my problem was that the phone app was unresponsive. No matter however long I keep it in the background with a faint feeling that it might load slowly but it never  turned up. I had to use Contacts app or Siri to dial my contacts. So I tried various fixes from various websites(which was mainly downgrade to iOS 9.0.1 or restore the device) but of no avail. So I tried to reset the settings of the phone. Go to Settings>General>Reset and Reset All Settings instead of Reset All Settings and Content(which is again your wish depending on your data backup). After the reset is done, don't restore the iPhone from your previous iTunes backup(as the problem still persisted). Then set up your device.

This process has helped me and my phone is running as it should and i haven't found any more faults the rest of the applications(upto my usage).

I know that my problem is different from yours but I hope this may help you in solving your problem as well.

    All the best.

I wanted to follow up to my earlier comments and let everyone the "No Service" issue could not be resolved by Apple's Engineers. They worked very hard with me for one week to get it resolved but nothing worked. They determined it's a hardware issue, and ended up replacing my iPhone 6 with a new one as I was still within my 1 year warranty,

    Regards

More or less the same issue here. I have been on Metro PCS with my iPhone 5 for a few years. Everything was fine. After upgrading to ios 9.0.2 my cellular data doesn’t work. Cellular Data Network doesn’t show on this ios anymore and after talking to a metro pcs agent, it seems that they don’t even know that. They can’t help. Since they don’t have a solution in hand, they just say that iPhone is not supported by Metro PCS. Apple doesn’t allow to jump back to the previous ios, so now we are all stuck with a phone that doesn’t connect to the internet. I can still make calls, though. Anybody found a workaround? Thanks.

Have your tried all of the following? Do them one at a time. If your cellular data is not back go to the next one:

    1. Restart your iPhone by holding the power and the restart buttons until the apple shows up
    2. Reset all network settings
    3. Reset all settings
    4. Restore your iPhone from iTunes and set up as new

The cellular data should come back at some point. Hope this helps!

update:.   Phone failed again after New SIM.  Finally went to Apple store.   Convinced the tech I've done all necessary diags and I was out with new free phone in ten minutes.  Even with these issues I would not want to deal with any other company.  If you have this problem you need a new phone.  Hope your in warrantee.

Got my new iPhone 6s on Friday night. Came home, installed updates and restored my previous back up. Thought I was good to go. Got a text from my mother the next day saying my phone is broken. could not receive calls. Then I tried to call out, every number is not activated. Impossible!

Rogers, my network in Canada says they don't know what's wrong. I got a new SIM. Still no resolution. I have spent hours on this. A lady at the rogers store said she had been dealing with this for four days. Today is a holiday in Canada so we cannot resolve with Apple directly. Between tech support, account support and doing all the factory restores and resets and network settings changes I can, the problem still persists! I paid a lot of money for this Phone. It should work!

Does anyone have the same problem? I can see my carrier and network. It just simply does not allow calls to come through or be made. I have no way of determining if it was the new iOS update or not as the phone was new from the box when updated And I never thought to test and make a call. The network showed up okay!

    Thought I would update:

On Oct 3rd I thought I had fixed it by restoring from factory and then backing up from previous version. So I did that and it worked... for 3 days. Next I tried to pop out the SIM card, hard restart while SIM was out and then putting it back in. That fixed it until this morning Oct 12th. No service when I woke up. Tried hard reset, went from "No Service" to "Searching..." and wouldn't stop. Tried SIM card + restart and nothing. Finally, I wiped it clean and restored again from a back up. No special back up, just the one done right before the restore. Seems to have helped.

If I am able to fix, Apple won't be able to help me unless I leave it alone and wait for an appt. at Genius Bar. Sadly, this phone is a replacement from my original iPhone 6, which had broken GPS under the previous update. I managed to get a new phone within the last 2 days of my warranty. I am out of date now. So even with brand new phone, I wonder how long I have to deal with this off again/ on again nonsense.

Try Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings and don't restore the previous backup from iTunes. After reset, configure your device. Don't worry, reset all settings doesn't remove your media and data just resets the settings. So you don't have to worry about losing data, but just the settings like Touch ID etc.

    Hope it works.

Salah, thanks so much for that tip. My cellular data is back! Here is what I did:

    1. Updated iTunes on my computer to the latest version.

    2. Tried to go back to 9.0.1 but it didn't work. iTunes said my iPhone was not eliglible for that.

    3. Reinstalled 9.0.2 just to see what would happen.

    4. Selected to restore from a backup I did in June.

It took a while but now it works.

Thank you and good luck everyone.

II've been having connectivity issues after the update. Sometimes it just says "searching". Had a new SIM card put in and same issue. Had to reset it (home key and power key) SEVERAL times. It seems every time I turn it off I have this issueNot when its placed in airplane mode. Then all of a sudden after a half a dozen resets, it works, although it sometimes goes down to 1x on the signal. I hope apple gets this fixed because I'm not the only one who seems to be having this issue.
