After the update, my Seagate hard drive that could be modified and changed is now turned into read only
is there a way to turn it back to the way it was before without deleting my data?

If that happened to me, I would try using Disk Utility to change the permissions.
Disk Utility is in the Applications > Utilities folder.
I have already tried going to Disk Utility but there are only a few options there - I don't know which button to choose because I don't want to lose any information on my hard drive

I installed the Paragon driver from Seagate and it works ... http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-master-dl/

I also had the same problem and this worked for me as well. I actually had this installed before I upgraded to OS X El Capitan, but I simply re-installed the driver and everything works just fine. Thanks so much for the help.
