Spotlight on Mavricks.

Mine is dead. Magnifier shows but is completely unresponsive. The finder completely reset itself a few days ago. First to the Mavricks screen and moments later to plain blue. I checked with an Apple Store staffer, they said not to fret, but I had not seen any further effects. Now I have no index. Should I be alarmed? If not, how do I get spotlight working again?

MacBook, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
