Q: Change default font size in Notes App in OS X El Capitan

In previous versions of the Notes App in OS X, you could change the default font by altering the DefaultFonts.plist file. No real preferences option from within the app, but it still worked. Now, in OS X El Capitan, you cannot overwrite that file. And the problem is the default font size for Notes is really tiny and there's no way to make it bigger for all notes by default. Any notes you write on your iPhone for example, synchronize on the Mac with a font that just isn't readable. Any ideas of how to change it permanently?

Yes I have this problem and it's extremely annoying. I've been using SimpleNote for years very successfully (Notational Velocity on the desktop) but had thought to give up fighting the Apple way and use Notes only to find that on a Retina screen it's practically unusable. Stupid, that Apple increased the resolution on all their devices but hard coded the font size in pixels. Frustrating.

My current workaround is to have a low resolution Dell screen hanging off the side of your 5k and drag the Notes app onto it.

Is it me or does it seem like the updates created for my computer, which i am required to install, are not well vetted? Is there anyone over 50 working in that office? could they please, pretty please run their ideas past some 50+ eyes to see if there might be any issues? Remember we baby boomers are the biggest portion of the population and we have tons of money!

I think this is just yet another example of the decline in Apple software quality and usability.

I don't understand why the word "Default" is so hard for people to understand. It means you don't have to change it every time This was borrowed from the Mail.app where the default font is never sent. Only sizes and fonts changed in each individual email get sent. Try this: Change your Default font for messages in Mail.app and look at your sent folder. You shouldn't be able to change fonts for messages already sent. Mail.app has been like this as long as Mail.app has existed, i.e. every version since MAC OS 9.

Even worse than that, there is a terrible lag when typing. I can type three sentences and sit back and read it as it slowly prints what i just typed letter by letter

back space causes a mega jump and bounce in the focal point of the app.

And lastly, using one font size, when i look at a paragraph, its as if the text is growing smaller and smaller like Alice in wonderland when she eats the cake

Curioser and curioser indeed - see below screenshot, and watch it get smaller and smaller from top to bottom.

    +1

Same here. The editing of plist seems no longer working and we have no idea where does the Notes read configs from or maybe some SDE hard-wired Helvetica 12pt in the code!

How does Apple overlook such basic stuff as the size of the font? I mean this is an app called "notes." Like you said, "somebody"(Apple Engineers) has set the default font size for all users to a tiny, unusable font size requiring it to be sized up for every new note you make. Hopefully they will get it soon and fix. Sorry but it's frustrating.

Open notes via spotlight . Type your desired subject in notes and select it by using command + A

Take your cursor on top menu bar > click on format > font > Bigger ( + ) .

You will notice the size of word / subject is increased  and it will be permanent  until you delete the notes , you can click on plus sign as per your requirement .
