Change the default font size in Notes App in OS X El Capitan

In previous versions of the Notes App in OS X, you could change the default font by altering the DefaultFonts.plist file. No real preferences option from within the app, but it still worked. Now, in OS X El Capitan, you cannot overwrite that file. And the problem is the default font size for Notes is really tiny and there's no way to make it bigger for all notes by default. Any notes you write on your iPhone for example, synchronize on the Mac with a font that just isn't readable. Any ideas of how to change it permanently?

First the good news: it’s possible to change the file by (temporarily) turning off SIP:

Reboot into Recovery Mode (hold cmd-R when restarting)
Enter Terminal
Enter: sudo csrutil disable
Restart

Next, the bad news: it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

I don’t really care about the new features of Notes, but I do care that I can’t find a way of defaulting to a more useful font & size (I prefer to default to a monospace font). How hard can that be?

Even if you do all that and change Applications/Notes.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/DefaultFonts.plist. It would still not work.

I have tried that. Obviously Notes takes no "note" of this file.

Bloody annoying.

Time to abandon ship and look at another desktop!!
