Q: time machine preparing backup stalling

Hi everyone,

I am sure this has been asked before, but I need some quick help. I have just updated to El Capitan from Snow Leopard. Before doing so, I made sure to back up my computer using time machine and it was successful. Now that I have El Capitan installed, I seem to be having quite a bit of trouble with time machine backups - when I go to do a manual backup, it stalls during the "preparing backup" state and will not advance any further. I left it alone for about an hour to see if perhaps it was just being slow, but to no avail. I read that using the "first aid" in disk utility might help it, but I tried that and it still does not seem to be responding.

Anyone have any hints or tips to help out?

Thanks a ton, if possible! I am not the most tech savvy so anything will be very much appreciated.

Best,

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11)
