Q: how do get os x 8.7. or later on my mac to sync my iphone 6

i have the iphone 6s. went to plugg into my mac book. said i needed to update itunes. my current itunes is 11.4 (18) so download itunes from itunes.com and is says" alert This update requires OS X version 10.8.5 or later" my current version is mac os x 10.6.8.. wat do i need to do inorder to restore my iphone with all my previous iphone contact pics etc i backuped on my itunes.
