El Capitan does not detect my external display

After upgrading to El Capitan on my MacBookPro (2015), my external display (27" Dell) is not being detected anymore.

I tried the Thunderbolt and HDMI ports, but makes no difference.

Also tried to re-detect the display (Settings -> Displays -> hold 'Option' -> 'Detect Displays') - but that does not result in a detected monitor.

Also tried to remove the power from the monitor, wait 1 minute and put the power plug back in. Also nothing.

Tried a fresh reboot of the Mac, again nothing.

Any ideas for me to try?

Thank you.

I have the identical problem. MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), external Dell display. Before El Capitan (10.11) it was detected reliably.

I tried:

- Manual "Detect Displays" in Settings does not detect it either.

- Power cycle monitor

- Use HDMI vs Thunderbolt

- Reboot

I found that I have the identical problem with a projector in a conference room, thus it doesn't appear to be Dell specific. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Edit: There are numerous bug reports in other forums of the same issue, but no resolution yet.

I've had this issue with multiple Dell monitors UP2715K 4K & P2715Q 5K, in Yosemite and El Capitan on a Macbook Pro Retina 2014. Put the Macbook to sleep manually, close the laptop, or lock the screen manually, and then attempt to wake the machine there is no output to the monitor. I've also used a series of different DP to Thunderbolt cables.

The only workarounds I've found are to remove power from the Monitor for a few seconds (works 10% of the time), or restart OSX (works 90% of the time).

I run into same problem as you too.

My Macbook air purchased in Y2015 Mar was working fine with Dell 24" U2417. This monitor come with display port. My MAC plug and play well.

Yesterday, I bough another Samsung 27" C27F390, this monitor only has HDMI, so I got to buy a HDMI to Display Port adapter (Brand = Daiyo) . When it connect to Macbook air. It just not able to detect by Mac.

I do all the Mac reset trick and it just won't work.

Thanks for sharing your experience and that confirm I have the same problem as you and highly chance caused by the adapter.

Wonder what brand is the adapter you use.

I am really disappointed. Neither my external monitor, nor my superdrive is recognised after upgrading to El Capitan. It is taking Apple a very long time to work on the problem, since I've seen elsewhere that they are investigating. I took my superdrive to the iStore in Pretoria (South Africa) where it was "tested" by the technicians. I was advised to buy a new one, which I did. The new one did not work either. Many hours later, I took my husband's Macbook Air. He had not yet upgraded to El Capitan. And yes, the superdrive was working.

I am experiencing the same problem. I have tried using a DVI to mini display port and VGA to mini display port (thunderbolt). I've tried using a Samsung SyncMaster SA350 and a DELL Monitor. It worked the first time I connected the macbook pro (mid-2011) to each of the monitors a few months ago, but since then it has not worked at all. I've tried the PRAM and SMC resets, adjusted the resolutions on both the laptop and monitor, tried the Display Monitor app. It is incredibly frustrating -- any updates on when Apple is going to release a fix for this? Or anyone else discover a fix?
