Q: Does Photoshop CS 5.1 work in El Capitan?

When I upgraded to Yosemite, Photoshop CS 5.1 would not work until I downloaded a special Java version Apple had that let PS work. So, I'm just checking about El Capitan before I decide if I want to upgrade.

Seems to work fine. Have not done any heavy lifting with it yet but seems to be the same as with Yosemite so far. You will need to reinstall Java.

Give it a go and please report back if you have issues.

Thank you for replying. As you work with CS 5.1, please reply back if you notice any conflicts with El Capitan. I'm still holding back on the upgrade due to some other known conflicts, such as PoserPro2014, the Dson plugin, and Reality 4.1. (But those are other stories.)

A video on youtube supposedly shows how to correct the problem:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdNa60_fC1Y

But it shows the new Java version being replaced by the older Java version. For Yosemite, I downloaded and installed the deprecated Java 6 version in order to run Photoshop, but it did not overwrite the newer Java version. It installed in a different place. I still have the latest Java 8 version for all other uses, such as Safari.

Did you have to overwrite your newer Java version? If so, doesn't this make your computer more vulnerable to viruses?

When I opened Photoshop CS 5.1 for the first time a dialog box opened and when clicked took me to the Apple site to download JavaforOSX.

Here is the description from the installer:

Java for OS X 2015-001 installs the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.

This package is exclusively intended for support of legacy software, and installs the same deprecated version of Java SE 6 included in the 2013-005 release. If you require Java for applets or other non-legacy uses it is recommended you download the latest version of Java from https://java.com.

Please quit any Java applications before installing this update.

See https://support.apple.com/kb/HT6133 for more details about this update.

See https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 for information about the security content of this update.

The Java Preference Pane still shows that I am running Java 8 which is the latest build.

    Hope this helps.

OK. Thank you. The movie on youtube shows a guy dragging files out of a zip file and replacing the newer java files with them. You ran the installer, which is what I have done with Yosemite. I didn't know that you could run the same installer with El Capitan. But if you encounter any problems with Photoshop CS5.1 in El Capitan, please post back here.

    Hi Stephen,

I tried to follow your instructions but after the download I followed the install instructions . It appears to have overwritten the Extensions and Home folder but not the JavaVirtualMachines folder.

    Photoshop CS 5.1 won't open.

Should I have not installed? Not sure how to extract the files from the package w/o installing?

    Appreciate your help.

    Thanks,

    Ho Pal Ong
