when I dial out or on with an incoming call i can barely hear when the phone is at my ear but the person at the other end can hear me. however it is clearly audible when i put it onto speaker. this happened while it was on iOS 9.0.1. I updated the software to 9.0.2 but the problem still persists.

I have re-set the phone 4 times. switched to LTE voice and data, turned off noise cancellation but no joy

None of these work. Quality is fine on speaker or with the headset.. Just did a hard reset and restored the phone but the issue still persists
The last thing to try is to restore as NEW - not loading your backup file - to test for a bit to see if something in your backup file is corrupted or one of your apps is affecting the device. If this does not solve the problem, this means that you have a hardware problem and should take the device to your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar (make an appointment first) to have it evaluated for service or replacement.

Tried resetting as a new phone but no.

Looks like I'll have to head to the service centre. Irony is I had to replace the phone within two days of buying it for my wife because it wouldn't charge. this problem has now occurred with the phone they replaced it with.
