10.11, Mail.app Memory Leak?

About 24 hours after upgrading to OS 10.11 (el capitan), Mail.app had essentially used up all available system memory bringing up the "Your system has run out of application memory" dialog and necessitating force quitting Mail.app. Since that initial force quit, Mail.app will reliably repeat this cycle when force quit and restarted — it works for about 5-10 minutes while it gobbles up RAM (apparently reading disc and dumping directly into RAM as the bytes read from disc in activity monitor initially correlate closely with the memory used). System reboot didn't break the pattern. I don't have any extensions installed in Mail...

Any thoughts? Feels like a memory leak. I can't imagine what its reading from disc - 120 gb is a substantial chunk of my hard drive...so, it seems it must be doing something repetitive...

After upgrading to macOS Sierra 10.12.4, my mail app suddenly developed a memory leak. Activity Monitor showed it was using 64 GB of RAM and growing every second. I did not want to try the "fixes" listed here as they are very disruptive and time consuming. I ran across this link, http://allgaierconsulting.com/techtalk/2015/2/4/fixing-app-memory-leaks-in-os-x- yosemite which solved the problem for me. The short version of what he says to do is 1) Repair disk permissions, 2) Reset SMC, and 3) Reset PRAM. MacOS Sierra's disk utility no longer allows you to repair permissions, but after resetting SMC and PRAM my mail app's memory leak was eliminated. I would suggest trying these steps, which are very quick, easy, and harmless before trying the more disruptive and time consuming suggestions that are posted as the official "solution" in this thread.

1. If you've installed any third-party plugins for Mail, remove them according to the developer's instructions, then log out or restart the computer and test. Back up all data before making any changes.

2. In the Advanced settings for the mail account, uncheck the box marked

Send large attachments with Mail Drop

if it's checked. If you have more than one account, repeat with each one. Relaunch Mail and test.

3. I've seen a report that Mail may leak memory if a Gmail or Google Apps account does not have the "Auto-Expunge" option enabled in its settings on the website. I can't confirm.

4. There are also reports that installing certain kinds of S/MIME certificates to encrypt mail may trigger a memory leak. I can't confirm that either, and I don't have a workaround, except to stop signing or encrypting messages. If you don't know what S/MIME is, this paragraph doesn't apply to you.

Oct 2, 2015 2:36 PM in response to Linc Davis

well, shoot...thanks for the suggestion...but, tried all of those and it seems the the behavior persists.

1. didn't have any 3rd party plugins installed (nothing in ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/)

2. mail drop was already turned off for all 3 accounts (gmail, exchange and iCloud)

3. i toggled off the auto-expunge setting in gmail, but nothing changed.

4. i don't know what S/MIME is

i also tried reinstalling 10.11, to no avail. your mention that the effect may be gmail specific made me think that it might make sense to serially disable accounts and see what happens...with all 3 accounts disabled, when mail is restarted it continues to rapidly consume memory...

i'm pretty surprised that the reinstall didn't fix it and am at quite the loss about what to try next...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

thanks again...

1. no problem when logged in as guest (couldn't get the gmail account to activate due to what seemed like a weird network security thing, but it worked for iCloud and exchange without rampant memory consumption)

2. problem persisted in safe mode and when rebooting after returning to regular/non-safe mode.

When you see that Mail is leaking memory, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Thanks again for the guidance.

1. Mail.app launched at 12:04:20

2. Mail.app quit at 12:05:50 (using more than 20 gigs of ram at that point)

3. Mail.app actually shutdown around 12:06:40

The app starts consuming ram immediately on launch. It looks like there is an interesting AddressBook warning shortly after startup. Not sure if the memory status_thread: idle exiting messages are interesting or are just reporting a consequence of the memory pressure.

Here are the 338 lines from the console between launch and actual shutdown:

Back up all data before proceeding.

Step 1

If Mail crashes or freezes immediately on launch, try the steps suggested on this page. Sometimes a corrupt message on a mail server can be deleted by logging in to the server through its web page. If Mail still won't launch, skip to Step 3.

Step 2

There are three types of mail account: IMAP, Exchange, and POP. You can determine the type of each account by opening the Mail preferences window, selecting the Accounts tab, and then selecting Account Information.

Select all POP mailboxes, if any, and then select

Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...

from the Mail menu bar. Export the POP mailboxes to the Desktop folder.

If you have IMAP or Exchange accounts, and you don't store sent, deleted, and junk messages on the server, export those mailboxes the same way. You can determine whether the messages are on the server by selecting Mailbox Behaviors in the Accounts tab.

Also export all mailboxes in the On My Mac category.

You don't have to export the other mailboxes, because the messages are stored on the servers.

Quit Mail.

Step 3

In System Preferences, open Internet Accounts (OS X 10.9 or later) or Mail, Contacts & Calendars (OS X 10.7 or 10.8). Make notes of the settings for each mail account (all types), then delete the accounts.

Step 4

In the Finder, hold down the option key and select

Go ▹ Library

from the menu bar. Move the following items (some may not exist) from the folder that opens to the Desktop:

Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd

Containers/com.apple.mail

Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent

Containers/com.apple.share.Mail.compose

Mail

Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”

Step 5

Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one account, using the information from Step 3. Test. If Mail works now, recreate the rest of the accounts (if you have more than one) and other settings.

Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data.

If there’s no improvement, quit Mail and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. Stop here and post your results.

Step 6

If you took Step 2, import the mailboxes you exported:

File ▹ Import Mailbox...

Select Apple Mail as the data type. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.

The mailboxes that you didn't export in Step 1 should synchronize automatically with the server. Again, if the mailboxes are very large, downloading them may take quite some time, and network performance will be slower than usual during that time.

If you skipped Step 2, look inside the Mail folder on the Desktop for a subfolder Mail/V2/Mailboxes. Import the mailboxes it contains.

Test. If Mail is still working, delete the items you moved to the Desktop in Step 4.

Oct 3, 2015 3:59 PM in response to Linc Davis

I discovered a massive memory leak in Mail on my iMac at home two days after upgrading to El Capitan. It would eat through 16 GB of physical memory in seconds and gobble up 150 GB+ of swap space soon after launch. This thread came up via a Google search for "el capitan memory leak mail."

I quit Mail, deleted the folders from my user Library folder (as outlined in step 4 of the post by Linc Davis) then relaunched Mail. Mail then started to re-download all of the messages from two accounts (iCloud and Exchange). I watched the Activity Monitor application after relaunching Mail. Mail fluctuated up and down between 100 and 350 MB of memory usage as it was downloading messages, but remained steady around 190 MB.

Thankfully, I did not have to delete my accounts from Internet Accounts, as that would have meant re-downloading 175,000 Exchange messages on my Macs back at work.

Oct 5, 2015 4:51 PM in response to Linc Davis

Hi,

I have followed the steps explained by Linc Davis.

1. Moved (deleted) old Mail related files and folders in Library

2. Deleted ALL internet accounts

3. Set up Mail as new

4. Reimported messages from the imap server

Worked like a charm for a few hours but then the memory leak with Mail started over.

Any clue with what could be happening ?

I'm running on a iMac, 27" late 2012, 3.2GHz i5, 8GB DDR3 mem. OSX 10.11 (el capitan)

Thanks
