Oct 4, 2015 5:13 PM in response to tfsutton0638by michael_88_88,Hi There,
I had the exact same problem as you. Here's what I did. Go to the app store and make sure iMovie is in the "purchased" tab. If it is delete the app and then re-download the app from the app store.
My model:
Macbook
Mid 2015
OS X El Capitan Dev. 10.11.1
Please let me know how this works out.

I did a complete uninstall of iMovie using CleanMyMac 3, rebooted then downloaded iMovie again.

Oct 6, 2015 6:25 AM in response to michael_88_88by mike_w,Hi Michael
I took your advice, and deleted the app (it was in my 'purchased') but when I went back to the app store it only gave me the option to 'update' and it wont update... it just spins and spins... do I need to do more to delete all tracks of imovie, and if so how?

Oct 26, 2015 2:52 PM in response to badtacoby oyclavin,What do you do if it's not in purchased folder? El Capitan has been a huge headache for me. Photoshop Elements has been crashing too.

Dec 13, 2015 6:24 PM in response to tfsutton0638by Advantageinv,I had this problem too and because of that, did not update my 2 video processing workhorses.
I just updated to the latest 10.11.2 on my MBP and now iMovie 11 (9.09) works as before, no crashing and no upside down thumbnails!

Dec 14, 2015 1:59 PM in response to Advantageinvby Rich Rydalch,Have you tried importing a still shot (photo)? If this works okay for you, you will be the first I have found in a month of searching that can run El Capitan and iMovie v9.

Dec 14, 2015 9:51 PM in response to Rich Rydalchby jono1949,Just tried importing a photo. Did 2, both worked fine. also imported some video and that worked too. So far, so good since I deleted the original (using CleanMyMac) and reimporting from the App store as suggested by Michael _88_88 (above)
Keeping fingers crossed.
