Q: Pages documents all gone after updating to iOS 9
ALL of my Pages documents are GONE after updating to iOS 9. I have never used iCloud Drive, ever. Nor have I ever done an iCloud backup.
Prior to updating, I did a full, encrypted backup of my device to my Mac Pro. Then I restored the device to iOS 9 (clean install) and activated iCloud. But not iCloud Drive. Tested iCloud was working just fine.
Then I restored my backup and waited as iTunes restored the apps. Part of the way through the restoration process, it stopped with an error message saying that some items could not be restored. On the device many of my apps appeared as grayed-out icons.
Subsequently I had to restart the Mac and the iPhone before it would let me continue the syncing process. Once all my apps were restored I went to use Pages but all my documents were gone!
I really need my documents to be there! How can I get those documents back onto my device?!
Note: other apps like Sketchbook still have the documents from before the update. My voice memos are all here. My Free Spreadsheet documents are all still here.
It appears just to be Pages and Numbers that decided to delete all my previous documents. Why would they do that?!

I have discovered the dark, dark truth. Use iWork with iCloud Drive - Apple Support says:
If you're using iOS 9
To keep your documents up to date across devices with iOS 9 or later, you must upgrade to iCloud Drive. If you haven’t upgraded to iCloud Drive yet, and you’re using iCloud with Pages, Keynote, and Numbers on iOS 8, iCloud is turned off when you install iOS 9. Documents you previously saved to iCloud are removed from your iOS 9 device but they remain stored in iCloud. To see these documents in iOS 9, open Settings from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and upgrade to iCloud Drive.
What that means is, after I updated my 5S to iOS 9 and my MacBook Pro to OS X 10.11, I unknowingly kissed goodbye my ability to have iCloud sync my iWork documents across my two computers and one phone, because my Mac Pro is still on 10.8.
What I also didn't know was that Apple's "carrot on a stick" to try to force me to turn on iCloud Drive was to delete all the local copies of my iWork documents from my iPhone. Well, that's not entirely true—when I checked my backup, I discovered that there never actually were any local copies! Hahahaha!
My iPad 3 is still on iOS 6, the last beautiful and silky smooth FPS operating system that it's compatible with. So while the documents I need appear in Pages on that device, they can't be opened. Hahahaha!
Good thing I still have my old iPhone 4S with iOS 7. I downloaded Pages on it, set up iCloud, and BOOM, there are all my documents. Thank God I didn't upgrade the 4S to iOS 9 yet... ! Whew! Boy would I have felt stupid.
Yep, this is the world we live in folks. Apple's new attitude: our way, or the highway. Get with the program if you ever want to see your precious documents again! Don't cry that we didn't warn you about this. You can't avoid the future. Our OS updates are free; we're not obligated to, y'know, warn you about any of this!
