OmniDiskSweeper catalogs your hard drive and shows you what’s on it. It doesn’t actually do anything else. When you say you are trying to clean up your Mac what do you mean exactly? Unlike Windows computers, the Mac doesn’t collect junk that can cause trouble. The worst that can happen is some temporary files stick around instead of being deleted. To clean these up reboot your computer while holding the shift key to restart in Safe Mode. This deletes old temporary files and checks/repairs the hard drive directory.

If you want to delete programs, for the most part you can simply drag them to the trash and empty it. There are some programs that come with an installer that also have an uninstaller. I make a note of these programs and use the Finder label command so I remember that. Other than this the basic rule of thumb is to delete only things that are in your personal drive space and never touch the Library or System folder unless you absolutely know what you are doing.

Clean up can mean different things to different people which is why I asked and then went on to describe what you shouldn’t do. For me, clean up means deleting applications I don’t use any longer and archiving data files I no longer use. I recommend OmniDiskSweeper as a good free program for cataloging the drive and looking at specific locations. It can help me find things like large tutorial files I don’t need and the like.
