I have 2 email addresses run through GoDaddy that sync to Mail, both POP, and they have both been fine until yesterday.  They simply stopped working and I received the dreaded "Trying to log into the POP account failed.  Verify that the username and password are correct."  Ive tried deleting both accounts and re-adding, as well at taking a stab at deleting their password from the keychain, no go.

These accounts have worked for months, there were no new updates or installs done, super frustrating......ugh

Many of the ideas posted here seem to work - but don't really. For awhile they may seem to have fixed the problem, but I believe that the problem lies with the email host - not apple. The reason I believe this to be true is that if you just close the notification and wait, it will "fix" itself. Actually that is not even true, it will begin working again. That could not happen if the mac had corrupted the account, the only logical answer is that aol or other host is having problems. Of course it could be anywhere along the path to the host. I checked http://downdetector.com/status/aol each time I received the message from my mail client and sure enough there were outage reports in my area. Yes, deleting the account and readding it appears to work, but so does just doing nothing and letting it 'cure itself'. I'd like to see apple allow you to stop notifications for that host if you desire. Normally when I get the notification, my email has already reconnected.

This may be an issue related to a Mac Mail option "Automatically detect and maintain account settings". Here is how I resolved it.

I am continuing to have this problem. Periodically, I have to delete my aol accounts from Mail and then re-add them. Eventually, I start getting asked for the password again, and it never takes it. Today, I deleted the accounts, and now it won't add them back in.

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts /Account Information. Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. See if the account is listed there. If so, delete the SMTP server for the account. Try to add the Mail account again.
