I upgraded to El Cap yesterday, and mac mail has been behaving oddly ever since. The most obvious symptom is that it won't delete any messages. I delete them, then a while later I get a pop-up that says it was unable to move the "xxx" message to the trash - only response option is OK, so I click OK and the message reappears in my inbox.
Any suggestions?

I have the same problem but it is limited to an Exchange server- iCloud and Yahoo accounts work just fine. Can't delete emails from an exchange server on them, so I have to delete from my phone or iPad! Hilarious.
Try rebuilding the mailbox.
If that doesn't work, try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Totally agree. I can delete emails on iPad and iPhone but certain emails refuse to go on MacMail.
Has anyone had any success rebuilding the mail database?
This is the first time in ages a new MacOs has caused me issues.
I have the same problem too, but I was able to solve it by going into Mail->Preferences->Accounts->Exchange and unchecking the "Store Deleted messages on the server" checkbox.
Thanks, poonstar - I think this did the trick! I have my gmail set up as imap accounts and wonder if they should be set up as exchange accounts?
