You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)

If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.

Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

A message says my backup could not be completed

    1. Make sure you're connected to the Internet with Wi-Fi
    2. If possible, try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network.
    3. See if you have enough iCloud storage for your backup, and get more storage if you need it.
    4. If you need more help, contact Apple Support.

    Try removing the old backup:

Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > (iCloud) Manage Storage > select backup > Delete backup

If everything is deleted, why only 3.4 GB available?  Your backup could be near that size.

Consider buying 50 GB for $0.99/month.  Otherwise, contact Apple support as linked in a prior post.

DID you try turning the back up off as opposed to deleting the old one, also you might try backing up to iTunes as an intermediate diagnostic step.

I even turn off photo (album) for back up. Before 9/16 I only used 1.+ gb for backup.

I don't think i still have warranty, can i still call apple support?

I'm having the exact same problem.

lasr backup was the night before I installed iOS 9.

    i Don't back up photos.

my backup size is LESS than 1GB, I have 4GB open in iCloud. I'll be dammned if I'll give Apple $.99 /mo for storage I don't need/won't use.

me thinks Apple has a bug in iOS9 they don't want to acknowledge...

I'M getting really tired of seeing this message.

not a real good endorsement for me to go buy an iPhone 6s...

    Hi Romany16,

My backup size was little over 1gb but till last nite i couldn't backup, still saying backup can not completed.

Not worth to buy extra gb if it doesn't let me backup on icloud.

It did work on my ipad. I really don't kno why.

Using icloud backup is so convenience, but now I can't ):

Need to use my mac to do a manually backup, at least I can backup once if something happened with my phone.

I hope still people can help me with this cus I wanted to use on icloud then computer.

    Thx

Similar issues for me.  tried it all, mine just starts the backup and starts the estimate process and just stops. says it can complete and says try again later.

Backs up fine to ITunes.  If you can't use iCloud for backups, or is unreliable, then it is yet another head scratcher.  Some keep suggesting iTunes.  I think something went wonky during the upgrade to 9, and wasn't fixed in 9.01, and still not fixed in 9.02.

I was thinking of just resetting to factory, and starting over.  This breaks some Corporate connections and certs.  Would be without email over the weekend.  A real painful process.
