iPod Recovery mode loop

My 30 gig 5th Gen iPod keeps displaying:

iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.

It loops this after every restore... Is my iPod bricked?

Any help would be appreciated..

yip

same situation, itunes has detected a corrupted ipod, needs to be restored, when you restore it same message - two days wasted going round in a pointless loop,

cant change disk letter either on computer management as drive showing unreadable.

whats more annoying is the amount of people on this forum with the same problem and no one at apple saying jack about it - the help page for this loop problem is about as useful as a chocolate teapot - many thanks again apple!

I got a 5th Generation iPod yesterday. iTunes has been on my PC for some time - I have a Nano. I plugged in the new iPod and became stuck in Recovery/Restore loop ****. It is not iTunes because my Nano works just fine including transferring songs.
I've read all of the posts and the solutions didn't work for me as most of them either didn't have another iPod product or didn't mention it.

Please help. I will try taking it back to the store today but I'm not hopeful.

I just got a 2nd gen shuffle last week, and have had the same looping issue. The shuffle was showing in windows and so i reformatted and renamed it - took out an apostrophe and any spaces that I had in the name. I shut everything down, brought it all back up and could then restore in iTunes. I have loaded all my music on and it seems to be working great.

if the ipod is otherwise working fine, it's possible
that the recovery mode message is being produced by a
Windows drive letter confusion. for troubleshooting
advice on that, see the following document:

"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode
- Use iTunes to restore"

This helped resolve my issue. I had a mapped home network directory that was causing a conflict when I was syncing up my videos via iTunes to my new 5th Generation iPod. So, I remapped my home network directories to other letters (e.g., Y:\ and Z:\) and my problem was resolved!!!! Thank you so much!!!

Interesting little twist...My daughter's iPod got stuck in the endless recovery loop immediately after installing the latest version of iTunes and the recent iPod update while synching to her iTunes account on her Windows PC. I dinked with it for a bit on the Windows PC and then on a whim, tried synching it to my iTunes account on my iMac. Oddly, this worked.

Later that day, my son's iPod (daughter has a nano and he has a 30 gig iPod I think) also got stuck in the recovery loop after trying to install the iPod update. Same procedure, synching it to my iMac worked without a problem.

After this, I decided to set up accounts for them on my iMac. I then moved all of their iTunes songs to the iMac, did syncs to their accounts and all was good.

I suspect the most recent Windows release of iTunes and the recent iPod update are faulty. The good news is that it is not your iPod that is broken (as our friendly electronics department store guy told us). This is definitely a software issue.

I'm hoping this little twist on the story will help someone more technical figure out just what sequence of events someone can follow to recover using their Windows PC.

Also note that the posting discussing network drive mapping as a potential culprit did not apply. The Windows machine has no network drives mapped.

Well, I was finally able to get it to work. I created another default user in windows xp. I installed itunes in it...then put the IPOD in disk mode. When I plugged it in itunes donwloaded the software updater bug fix and it went through the usual restore process..only this time when the ipod rebooted the recovery mode screen didnt come up...just a big apple. I knew I had something different going on finally. AT that point the IPOD wasnt showing up in the itunes interface or the mycomputer window so I unplugged it, reset it, and plugged it back in again. This time itunes asked the setup questions and wanted me to name my ipod...ect. I just followed easy instructions from there. Hope this will help someone else...I know how frustrating it is!!!

I am also encountering the same problem. I updated the IPOD software and Itunes and now my IPOD 60GB is in a recovery loop. I have tried restoring it on multiple machines with no luck.

Prior to the update my IPOD was working fine for close to a year. It is broke for more than a month now.

Hope someone in Apple is reading this mail and is going to do something about fixing this. Right now, my ipod is totally useless and the serial number is also not being recognized on itunes, so cannot do any restores.

Not sure how this piece of expensive junk is going to be recovered.

are there any other suggestions for resolving this?

i have the 30 gig 5th gen ipod, brand new. i was able to upload a couple cds onto a friends computer right after i got it, but several of the tracks would end prematurely. when i got back to my computer i plugged it in and tried to sync it, it seemed to work, but i was told that it needed to updated. my internet was down at the time, so it had to wait, i pulled it off the dock and everything was fine.

when i plugged it in later to charge, it wiped all the tracks and didn't reload them, which i didn't initially notice. when i noticed, i plugged it back in, and was told that i needed to restore the factory settings. now i have my internet connection again, and have gone through the motions to restore the factory settings, but after it finishes the restore, it loops and i'm told i need to restore it again. it also tells me that its updated, though the ipod is completely unusable.

there's no operating software on the ipod, so disc mode isn't an option, i've tried reinstalling itunes, i've tried re-naming/re-mapping the ipod's drive (from E to H), and i've tried to restore it from different user accounts on my computer, i've even tried connecting it to different USB ports, but i'm getting nothing but the loop. at the moment i don't have access to any other computers to see if i can fix it on a different computer, though when i go back to work on tuesday i will give it a shot.

as it is now i've got a brick, i'm a little frustrated.

This is driving me crazy!!!! I have tried everything! Restoring, reseting, changing the drive letter...nothing is working!! My son's 30G ipod is now a very expensive paper weight!!! Why is no one from Apple addressing this? I can't believe the number of people who are having the same issue!!! This is ridiculous!! To think I was actually going to upgrade my 20G ipod to an 80G!! Forget that! I think I'll look into Zune!!!

I am also having this problem with the ipod 5th
generation and it only started after I updated my
Ipod, and uploaded the lastest itunes 7! My ipod was
fine before, I've had to put it in the sort of dos
mode (I forget what it's called) in order to stop the
looping. It just keep turning it self on, has the
apple symbol and then turns off only to repeat again.
Everyone was telling me it was the battery, but it is
full. I restored the whole thing, and wiped all my
songs. I tried to update it again with the itunes 7
(which keeps crashing on me too)and it just continued
to reboot. Can someone please answer this question.
It's very frustrating. Once I fix this problem, I
don't think I shall use latest versions of itunes!!
If it's perminantly damaged my ipod.

Me too and despite reding all these messages, I am still getting the same problem. Did you get a fix?

Hi,

The solution that has worked for me is to set up another 'user' in my Windows XP operating system and to run this so that I don't have much other software loaded. This user location has allowed me to connect my iPod without a problem every time and to maintain/update the music on the iPod. Previously when I tried to run it in my own 'user' area, it simply would not connect. I believe this was due to conflicts with software (perhaps a drive labelling isuue because I have software that provides me with an additional, hidden drive). But not being an expert, I can only guess at this.
NB When I first achieved my sucessful connection I did not want to have to redo all the work I had done labelling, rating and editing in the library, so I copied my itunes folder from my original user location, where I had toiled laboriously to get my iPod to connect without success, to my new (Ipod working) user location - overwriting the similarly labelled folder that was automatically set up by the iTunes software in my new location.

I sincerely hope this helps.

Regards,

Mike
