How can I retain old POP email files in Mail when I change my account to web based IMAP?

Using MacMini with OSX 10.10.4 I am converting my desktop based POP Mail account to web based IMAP account so that my iPad Air running iOS 9.0.2 will synchronize email. My existing POP Folders and Files in Mac Mail on the computer is elaborate, with files with thousands of emails back to 2011and earlier. Assuming I move only currently active files which will now synchronize with my iPad — QUESTION — How can I continue to access and use the Mail POP archives remaining in my desktop after the old POP email account is closed?

A web-based mail account operates through your browser, not Mail. So there is no impact on your email account in Mail. If you need to save your old POP email, then archive them and store them outside of the mail folder on the computer or don't delete the account.
