Q: OS X EL Capitan crashes and shuts down my computer 2-3 times a day

I installed OS X EL Capitan and since the install my computer crashes and shuts down 2-3 times a day.  There is no logic or pattern to these crashes.  Anyone else having this issue?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), iOS 9.0.2

You seem to have some stuff installed from Symantec - I cannot say, but maybe is this Norton?

Anti-virus software should not be used on the mac - it can cause more problems than it solves.

I suggest you run Etrecheck and post its report. Most of the problems people are having are due to either old incompatible software, anti-virus or "cleaning" software. By looking at the Etrecheck report we may have an indication of possible suspects.

Luis, You are correct that the Symantec product is Norton anti-virus for Mac. I have read numerous pros and cons of anti-virus software on Macs and can't seem to break the habit (?due to fear) of using it. I will follow your advice and post results. Thank you for your prompt reply.

I would start by uninstalling Norton and see how it affects the system.

Also, I am not sure what the LaCie software, but it apparently is not being loaded, so I don't think it is causing anything.

Software by external drive vendors is useless on the mac, so I would never install it. You may want to uninstall this as well.

You also have Adobe pdf plugin - I understand that old versions of this cause problems. Some people may require this for special pdf handling, but for most people Adobe Reader and the Adobe plugin are not needed. I suggest you uninstall or make sure it is fully updated.

Luis, I have uninstalled Norton, will allow MBP to sleep for a long period and see if it crashes then post again. The LaCie is an external HD for back-up. The Adobe is fully updated. Thanks, I'll post tomorrow (hopefully with good results). Carl

Yes, I'm having the same problem.  I did what Kappy and ACLBF recommended with no results.  I don't get any error messages or any warning.  The screen just goes black and then the computer restarts.  I've attached my EtreCheck below for reference.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks.

First of all, I would remove Norton Antivirus.

Antivirus software causes more harm than it prevents. It is quite likely that it is involved in the crashes.

Second, try disconnecting the USB devices (DYMO, Bose) and see if it makes any difference. Also, make sure that any drives for them are fully up to date.

Third, you have a lot of internet plugins. I bet that most are unnecessary. They seem to be pretty old - notice the mentions of SDK 10.6.

Luis, Another crash this AM when starting up from sleep and a Safari crash when reviewing an item on the ATT.com website (another random Safari crash). I uninstalled Norton and cancelled the subscription, removed all internet plug-ins and ran Etrecheck. The first time through it showed Adware which I removed with Adware Medic. I also uninstalled Adobe. A second run of Etrecheck showed a launch item that failed (?Yahoo-related) which I tried to remove. Any help you can provide is, again, much appreciated. Here is the latest Etrecheck:

Can you post the most recent kernel panic log?

You have parts of intego installed--looks like their backup stuff, but I'm not particularly familiar with it.

Can you boot into Safe Mode and not kernel panic? Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

I am concerned about this line:

        [loaded]    com.apple.systemprofiler.plist - Invalid signature!

At this point I would suggest you seriously suggest a clean install - although you should try Barney's suggestion first.

Your system may be compromised or damaged by all this stuff.

You should have a good backup of your data, of course. If you do decide on a clean install, I suggest you test it for a while and then only bring back the user account(s) from the backup, NOT the applications and other settings.

One of the common errors I have seen on these fora is that people do a clean install followed by a full restore from Time Machine - thus bringing back all the problems from the previous installation.

Barney-15E, Thanks for your suggestions. In all likelihood I will get my next kernel panic log after many hours of sleep mode, probably tomorrow AM. I seem remember a program called "Intego" from years ago (looked like a safety lifesaver ring for use in the water), I'll try to isolate it and remove it from the MBP. Lastly, I started the computer in safe mode, tried to print your post to review and the print function became pixelated. I restarted without safe mode and will take Luis' suggestion to do a clean install. I'll report back after that (tomorrow morning), hopefully with good news.

I tried some of Barney-15E's suggestions (see above) and didn't like how choppy things got so "clean install" it will be. My wife has a MBP with El Capitan and has had a rare Safari crash and no sleep-related kernel panics so maybe the clean install will resolve my issues. Thanks for getting back to me. I will repost in the morning after my MBP has slept all night.

You aren't supposed to run that way permanently. Just long enough to confirm that the panics have stopped.

If they have, then the panic log will likely have information we can  use to determine what is causing the panics.

If it doesn't happen often enough as you imply, then just post the panic log and we might be able to determine the cause.

Panic Report again this AM then Mail Quit Unexpectedly so I restarted in Safe Mode which cleared the Mail app problem. Since the Panic Reports are only after prolonged sleep (i. e., every AM), I will post this morning's report in its entirety. I hope this amount of data is not inappropriate for the ASC. I look forward to your reply. Carl

Carl

Unfortunately, there is nothing in that report that would imply a third-party software or hardware issue, which pretty much only leaves an internal hardware problem. If you have one nearby, make an appointment at the Genius bar at the Apple Store and have them check it out. Make sure you back up before dropping it off.
