Q: OS X EL Capitan crashes and shuts down my computer 2-3 times a day

I installed OS X EL Capitan and since the install my computer crashes and shuts down 2-3 times a day.  There is no logic or pattern to these crashes.  Anyone else having this issue?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), iOS 9.0.2

After a fortnight monitoring activity I found a solution: don't overuse Safari (by opening zillion windows) and frequently quit it.

Chrome, which I hailed in the last post as four times "cheeper" is in fact much more RAmemory-expensive! It was cheeper while still fresh, but as soon as you start opening windows it accumulates the data in "Google Chrome Helpers" (so called in Activity Monitor) and at the end uses much more RAM than Safari.

I still think something is very wrong with El Capitan RAM usage, because earlier I had had zillion Safari windows open, never pressed cmd+q and my Mac worked without a single hiccough. But I'll have to settle with this change, for now.

But I have to add, I'm impressed with the way Grifbatman426 lost all seven Gb! What does it mean? My future mac'll have to take about 70Gb RAM in order to work normally?

If I may give an advice: @Grifbatman426loose Chrome and CleanMyMac :-)

And I forgot: Thanks to all, again, for input and help :-))

I have the same issue, maybe is the high performance graphics card.

I don't think is safari problem, but when you access a site that requires high graphics then the problem occurs.

Today I downloaded a free program in order to push my mac to use only integrated graphics card and is working smoothly so far.

On my Mac, it is Safari. Doesn't release RAM. No problems any more since I started quitting Safari - thing I never did previously.

I'm running into the same issue. Bought this Macbook pro from my sister and didn't wipe it clean. Probably should have. Here is the log of my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

I'm having similar issues with El Capitan crashing. You can see from the etrecheck that it crashed 5 times within a 5 hour span today. I had the same problem with Yosemite, but no issues whatsoever when I was running 10.6.8. I've done a number of clean reinstalls and been to the genius bar at my local Apple Store numerous times to address the issue, but no luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,

    Mark

Can you post the kernel panic log. It would be best if you started your own thread using the New link at the top of the page.

You can find the log in Console app under the System Diagnostic Reports heading. Click the disclosure triangle next to the heading to show the reports in that section.

    Hi Barney,

Any idea what this crash report means?  I'm guessing my GPU is broken.  I get many random crashes and, as i DJ, this is most unhelpful.

I have graphics switching disabled on a mid 2010 MBP.  Im hoping it's not a logic board fault but fearing the worst.  Any help tips to resolve this from any members of the community would be gratefully received.

Rational, common sense reply with a couple of other items possibly causing this issue (from a long list of various possibilities). Issue can also be due to faulty HDDs or, especially, SSDs where the problem cannot be replicated when tested or diagnosed.

E.g. we had two Samsung SSDs, within a two month period, that were causing issues (guess all Samsung SSDs are problematic!). Our Mac Pros (work stations) were either shutting down infrequently or starting from the recovery. The drives were tested several times each. The drive errors or issues would not show on all tests, resulting in infrequent drive errors on numerous tests. We finally convinced Samsung, from experience, that the drives were faulty (argued with Samsung that the Logic Boards were not the issues). Drives replaced, problems solved.

Could be due to a faulty connection on the motherboard (SSD slots). As with your list and these two examples, the list can go on and on. However, before pointing the finger at an OS upgrade, it's only fair and rational to conduct numerous diagnostic tests including non-Apple hardware. For instance, using the SSDs again as an example, SSDs are extremely fragile when compared to HDDs. SSDs just do not have the stability and reliability that their predecessors did.

Bottom line, users need to slow down, invest some time in testing not only Apple software, but non-Apple apps, hardware, etc. or go to an Apple shop to have your system tested if not equipped with adequate, reliable testing apps.

    Hi Barney,

Any idea what this crash report means?  I'm guessing my GPU is broken.  I get many random crashes and, as i DJ, this is most unhelpful.

Yes, but it would be better to start your own thread. Just because you are having kernel panics doesn't make it the same problem.

I read through this entire thread as I, too, recently had El Capitan crashing. I thought it was due to the 10.11.6 revision and rolled back but still had the problem.  My system is a MBP 2009 mid year edition. My situation was I added a game recently in addition to the revision upgrade so I was not sure if it was the fault of the game, or not.

What I learned from my son's help (he is a net security sw programmer):

    1) The game was not the culprit but did help identify the problem.

    2) A graphic stress test run showed that the system crashed immediately.

    3) This stress test lead us to check the energy settings. My son changed the energy saver mode from "better battery life" to "higher performance". This forced the OSX to use the separate GPU not the GPU that is on the CPU.

    4) The stress test ran fine after that.

    5) We then tested the game that was crashing and it was fine too.

So, at least for my model laptop with the two GPUs, changing that setting fixed the problem. The OSX should never cause hard crashes/fatal errors like that so it is my belief that OSX has a bug. The GPU on my CPU works fine for all other low performance graphic needs. Those of you who had your logic boards swapped out may not have needed this as a fix, but maybe you had a GPU on a CPU as well. Maybe yours was faulty, who knows.

I hope that OSX developers see these posts so they can understand why most of their computers may not have any El Capitan crashes while others do. We all have to remember that years ago Apple didn't roll out so many Operating Systems and still support past ones as they do today. This is all very complex and makes the job of support staff really hard to figure out each persons individual problem.

In my case the communication at the lowest level between the low level CPU on the GPU and the separate high level CPU was failing and causing fatal crashes. Maybe this information can help others, too.

So solution is: System Pref>Energy Setting> make sure high performance option is ticked, re-login.

I tried a clean install and it had no positive effect. Changed working routine: less Safari, less Office—still BEACHBALL one a day. Hard reset every time.

Finally, somewhere I read a suggestion that Calendar might be at fault. Someone suggested:

Close Calendar.app, go to ~/Library/Preferences/ in your home folder and delete com.apple.iCal.plist.

I did that. Now I can't even launch Calendar, but I haven't seen the beach ball since. It's been a week

Do you also have a 15" MacBook Pro Mid 2010. Many shipped with bad GPUs. Preventing GPU switching does alleviate the problem to some degree.
