Geotagging in Photos

I moved away from Photos when it first came out because there didn't seem to be any way to put location info on my photos (the ones taken with a digital camera, not with my iPhone). Some reviews I've read of El Capitan lead me to believe that maybe in the update this feature is back and you can now put location info on your photos. Can anyone verify whether or not this is true?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You could also craete an Automator action (Only in El Capitan).

Open Automator and create a new service.

  • Drag a "Get Selected Photos Items" action to the workflow.
  • Drag a "Show Photos on Maps" action to the workflow.

Save the workflow and double click it to run in the Finder. When prompted to install, let Automator install it as a service.

Now select a photo in Photos, then run the service. It will show the photo as a pin on a map in the Maps.app, and the GPS will show in the URL field of the map.

If your region settings use a comma to separate decimals, you will have to edit the commas and change them to decimal points.

That part is still buggy.

Photos does not show the GPS coordinates.

You could use an Apple Script I posted. It will copy the GPS values to the clipboard.

Or simply export the photo to the Desktop. Make sure, "Include Location" is enabled in the Export panel. If you select the exported photo in the Finder and press ⌘I for "File > Get Info", the GPS will show in the "More Info" part of the info panel.

leonie,

Thanks for your tip. I am sorry, but I am having trouble. I followed your instructions, opened Automator, drug "Get Selected Photos Items" to the workflow and then drug "Show location in Maps" to the workflow ("Show photos on maps" must have been replaced?). I saved it and it shows up in the ~/Library/Services folder. Now, however, when I go to Photos and select a photo and click on "Services," this service does not show up. I am running Sierra 10.12.1 on a MacBookPro. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

I'm not sure, what you want to do.

In Photos on El Capitan or Sierra you can select several photo thumbnails at once, open the Info panel with ⌘I, then enter the name of a place in the "Add a location" filed or type latitude and longitude in degrees (separated by a space) into the "Add a location" field. Enter the fractions of the degrees separated by a decimal point, not a comma, even if your system preferences are set to use a comma as a separator.
