live photos do not animate in Photos on iMac

I just started taking "live photos" on my iPhone 6s+. Photo stream delivers them to the Photos app on my 27" iMac Retina Display. They don't animate. I believe I read somewhere they are supposed to display a "live" icon of some sort. None do

If I go to the Photos app and look under the menu heading labeled Image, there is a selection labeled "Turn on Live Photo" which is greyed out.

How do I turn it on?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11), Photos app v 1.1

I am having this problem too, but I think the problem is actually with photostream - I am not sure that it is delivering Live Photos, but rather just the still jpg.

I don't use iCloud Photo Library due to the size of my library, preferring to use the photo stream to have the last 1000 photos viewable on iPad, and my large library on my MacBook Pro.

I have a 6S, iPad Mini, and MBP running El Capitan. When I take a live photo on my 6S it shows as a live photo on my camera roll. It doesn't show up as a live photo on the photo stream album on the phone, and is also still on my iPad and Mac photo streams. The still photo is then imported into my Photos library on the mac from the photo stream. Only problem is, I want the live photo - so I plugged in my phone.

The photos were all recognised as already imported, so I expanded that bit and manually imported all the photos I had taken since getting the 6S. Then I had duplicates of them all - and both of them, in the case of live photos, were "live" a day or so later, upon opening Photos, the duplicates had disappeared, leaving just the live photos behind. I've just manually added three more live photos from this morning - the still photos have been converted into live ones, and currently I have six photos (2 x 3) in the library - but I've had duplicates disappear twice now so these might go down to 3.

I wouldn't mind having to import the "live" part of the photo like this, if they showed up under import as needing to be imported, rather than already being in the library. As it is I can't see from import whether something is live or not, so I'm having to reimport everything manually (which negates the point of photo stream).

Ideally, live photos would start working with photo stream.

Thanks. It sure does work. Unlike a previous input, Photos in iMac under El Cap will show animation when you click on the Live icon in the lower left corner. For some reason I'm getting some dupes when I "reimport" the Live photo but that's a minor problem and will probably be remedied.

The bottom line is, Live Photo will work in Photos on an iMac running El Cap.

Thanks for your input.

Update: the duplicates have all resolved back down to singles this morning, shortly after opening Photos app. It's left behind just the live photos.

I think apple needs to fix it in one of two ways:

Live Photos show up on Import tab as needing to be imported, as videos do. As it is they are grouped in with the previously imported photos.

Or

Photo stream (and from what I can tell from other support threads, iCloud Photo Library) needs to start syncing Live Photos. This is definitely the preferred solution, so they end up on other iOS devices' photo streams, and in my Photos library straight away without needing to be imported.

Agreed! This is very frustrating. I have 161 photos on my 6s, a combo of Live Photos and stills, as I frequently toggle the Live feature on and off. Photos for Mac is saying they are all imported, but I know for sure that only the stills have made it to my Mac via Photo Stream.
