Q: my calendar is stuck on "moving calendars to server account"

iCal has stopped working because it is allegedly "moving calendars to server accounts". what does that mean and will it ever stop? It's had that message up for hours since installing OS X El Capitan. I have tried force quitting iCal to try to get it to stop, but when i open it, it flashes a message that states "upgrading calendars" and then opens up the same "moving calendars to server accounts" message and continues to be apparently dead and useless.

Also, when I log in to the computer there is an error message that says "network accounts not available". I can still log in and I can still use everything, including exchange and google mail via the mail client, but my iCal won't work.

what's going on????

I just spent 30 min on the phone with Apple Tech Support. Here's their fix:

Go to System Preferences, Internet Accounts. For each account you have, UNselect the calendars check box.

Restart your computer in safe mode by holding down the shift key and then going to the apple symbol (top left) and select Restart. KEEP HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT KEY until the computer shuts down, reboots, and you see the Apple symbol. Then you can let go of the shift key while it continues to boot. Login and open up the calendar application. You should see an empty calendar but also no error message. Close the calendar. (All of this is going to go slowly because your computer will be much slower in safe mode. Be patient and don't click on things multiple times.)

Restart your computer again in the regular mode (don't hold down the shift key).

Go to System Preferences, Internet Accounts. For each account that had calendars selected before, select the calendars check box again.

Close sys prefs and open your calendar. It should be working now.

Wish this solution worked for me. It doesn't.  No matter what I do when I open iCal I get the pop-up message box "Moving Calendars to Server....". And I am completely unable to access my iCal. This happened once I upgraded to El Capitan :-(  I figured it would take time so I went away for the afternoon but 4 hours later the message still appeared.  I'm surprised I am not finding more Apple users experiencing same problem.  Been impossible to find solution thus far.

I have managed to cure the "moving calendars to server accounts" message by doing the following:

    • First force quit iCal. It wont quit conventionally because of the message.
    • Open up system Preferences and navigate to accounts  > System Preferences > Accounts
    • Deactivate the iCloud. - I had already tried deselecting calendars etc etc to no avail.
    • Restart iCal.
    • That should be it

Note: In my case I do not use iCloud for much. I do not know for certain the impact of deactivating iCloud if you use it regularly. I have re-actived iCloud with no adverse effects, but as I say, I don't use it for anything of any significance

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately, does not work.  At least not for me.

I had the same problem and it is now fixed ... 58 minutes on the phone with apple support but it is fixed.

The problem in its basic form was that the calendar / iCloud login was "stuck" and needed an interrupt to fix.  Do the following:

    1. See above instructions to reboot in "Safe Mode."  ... note: may not be needed but apple care had me do this to see if there were any disk problems first.

    2. Apple > System Preferences > Users & Groups

    3. click on the "+" sign near the lower left corner of the "Current User" box to create a new user on your mac.  You may need to click on the padlock in the very lower left corner & enter your mac's password if your preferences specify locking

    4. In the pop up box for creating a new user, select: "New Account: Standard", "Full Name: "test", account name can be blank, "Password: use iCloud password", and enter your iCloud ID, click "Create User."

    5. Login to your Mac using the newly created "test" user: 1. click on your normal user name in the upper right top of the Mac screen, 2. click on "test" and 3. enter your apple iCloud password.

    6. Lauch calendar and you should see a plan calendar with no "moving account..." notice

    7. Close calendar

    8. Login to your Mac using your normal user and password

    9. Lauch calendar

    10. Viola!  problem solved (for me)  In essence, logging into calendar as a new user caused the needed interrupt.

    11. Reboot in normal mode and go have a beer.

I use icloud for email, calendars, keychain and pretty much everything. In the end, logging out of icloud on the computer - WHICH REMOVES THE LOCAL VERSION OF ICLOUD FILES - was fine with me, because the cloud version was the one I was trying to restore and replace the corrupted local version. So I logged out and after it cycled through to confirm I was ok with removing local versions of calendar, tasks etc, it logged me out. Then up pops a login window, I logged in and 10 hours of pain was gone.

    Thanks for the tip.

    Hi Anne,

    1. Click on the apple top left.

    2. Open System preferences.

    3. Click 'Internet Accounts'.

    4. You will have an account called iCloud. Click on that.

    5. Deselect the checkmark next to the icloud drive.

    6. It will cycle through some warnings. Keep in mind that this is just telling you that local files will be erased. Provided your icloud (in the cloud) is ok, none of this matters, so proceed.

Once done, it probably wouldn't hurt to re-boot, but this probably isn't even necessary.

    7. Go back into preferences>internet accounts>icloud, and re-check the icloud drive. This will then reload all your stuff into calendars etc. Give it a few minutes to update.

    That should do the trick.
