Q: my calendar is stuck on "moving calendars to server account"

iCal has stopped working because it is allegedly "moving calendars to server accounts". what does that mean and will it ever stop? It's had that message up for hours since installing OS X El Capitan. I have tried force quitting iCal to try to get it to stop, but when i open it, it flashes a message that states "upgrading calendars" and then opens up the same "moving calendars to server accounts" message and continues to be apparently dead and useless.

Also, when I log in to the computer there is an error message that says "network accounts not available". I can still log in and I can still use everything, including exchange and google mail via the mail client, but my iCal won't work.

what's going on????

Thank you so much for sharing this - it didn't work for me but maybe it will for some other people. It must depend on the system and so on.

None of these suggestions are working for me either.  I have tried the safe mode and the "test" user .  Did you ever find a solution?

Yes I followed the advice to log out of iCloud - so you go to settings - go to iCloud- go to log out.  You will be told that you will lose all your files - but in fact they are actually saved on the cloud - and it tells you that.  You then click the things you want to delete from your mac.  In particular "calendar."  Then you log back into your iCloud account and in my case the whole situation resolved itself and the calendars synced etc. In fact I copied some of the pages files  that I keep on iCloud to my hard drive but I didn't need to - it was just to be safe and indeed after about ten minutes everything was back in place and the calendar worked.  So - preferences; iCloud; logout of your account; tell the computer which files you want to delete as it asks you; log back in to your account and patiently wait for everything to load up again. Don't be inpatient - the whole logging out of could takes time.

Louisart - this worked for me. Oddly, I had this problem on a brand new MacBook Air with El Capitan already installed. Maybe it's real name is El Crapitan? ;-)

    Thanks for the clear advice

Yes, logging off, force quitting Calendar, logggng in again worked for me too, after calling support about a password problem.  Now how do I sync everything again?  What happened to the little sync icon (double arrow circle) in menu bar in El Capitan?

Unfortunately the first solution of deselecting & reselecting did not work for me, so I tried this one, being desperate. I lost everything in my ical. I don't get the error message anymore, but my ical is completely blank.

Is there any way to recover? any ideas any one???

Yep, the extra account creation section (℅ your 58 minutes on the phone) solved the problem. Thanks and well done!

thanks man this was the only thing it helped me. since the last upgrade I sync my phone and all of it was gone on my iPhone (contacts calendar photos all ) so I had to restore from my last sync that was 8/15/15 and all of it was lost. I tried to open my ical and it had this stupid bar and message “moving calendar to server'

I do not care for iCloud so I logged out (well all my recent email contacts and calendar were lost again) but I was able to sync it with my phone so at least I have them since 8/15/15.

    So Hutstar thanks!!!

Apple you have earned from me my first BAD APPLE!!!

The other solutions in this thread didn't work for me. For El Capitan, the solution I found was to go into System Preferences>Users & Groups and in my main Admin account, I changed my login password from the "separate password" (that is the non iCloud password I had been using) to my iCloud password. Restarted the computer. Solved.

Do this simple thing.. Works for all OS including El Capitan.

    0) Force quit the calendar app if its open.

    1) Open System Preferences

    2) Click iCloud

    3) Click Sign Out, it will ask if it can delete all local files from the mac. Click Ok, since you have the backup in iCloud.

    4) After signing out, add your account again.

    5) This time it will sync the Calendar properly
    6) And the Calendar app works again. No more "Moving calendars to server account".
