It's never been available for Apple computers, not ever.

Check your facts. In its day, it was the most popular Mac browser for years.

    Even before OS X:

Why would Internet Explorer be available for Macs?  It's never been available for Apple computers, not ever.  IE is awful, if I may be so bold, and when I used PCs, from the time of my first one to my last one, I never used it.  I used Netscape and then Firefox once it became available.

It works OK, it's just a bit of a memory hog. Less so than Google Chrome, but it's still less efficient.

Check it out for yourself, use your activity monitor.

This thing that annoys me the most about Firefox is that it keeps prompting me to make Google my search engine when it's already set as my Firefox search engine.

But, it's already set for Google:

Yes, I can see that.  You'll note that I edited my response to reflect the fact that I misread your comment.  There was no need to follow up.

Chill out. Do you have the same issue with it?

It also keeps prompting me to make Google my homepage when it's already set as my homepage. And then, it prompts me to sign in to my Google account, only to repeat the prompt the next time I startup FireFox.

well I didn't notice, and if you feel I was attempting to do anything aside politely let you know something you might not be aware of you are mistaken.

I get a frozen screen that doesn't respond and slightly overlaps the traffic lights ay the top. It may be a lag and if I wait long enough it may be OK, but that lag renders it unusable. I would be happy to use Safari, but it seems to have problems with Microsoft Silverlight which SkyGo needs. It then crashes the os.

So I decided to install it to see if my mac was experiencing the problem you were having.

Once I downloaded the app and moved it into my application folder, double clicked to start it.

It then asked me if i wanted to migrate bookmarks etc to Firefox, i declined at this point

but was able to open the browser, there was a minutes delay as it set itself up

and was ready to go, it then asked me to enter e-mail address etc to further its set up

which I again declined as I am only doing this to show it can be installed.

but i am sure theat had i gone through with all this it would work perfectly as many other people have experienced.

my preferred choice is Safari but as you have mentioned it is not suitable for you

there are other browsers that may be more, you.

I will never use Chrome because:

    1. It is a Google product (not allowed in this house), and

    2. I do not care for their business model (extracting and selling your personal information).

From what I've read here, it is rather resource intensive, but then that is no surprise considering the source.

As for Internet Explorer, I had to use it about 7 or 8 years ago; at that point, it was the worst, slowest, most un-intuitive browser on the planet. Fortunately, they discontinued the Mac compatible version soon thereafter. I have no clue how it works today (on a Windows machine).

I get that occasionally on FF (which is my default browser):

I believe it is to convince you to sign up for a Google account. Just for kicks, I clicked on the show me link a few weeks ago and wound up at a sign-up for a Google account page. That may have changed of course, but they do try to get you whichever way they can.
