Q: Downloading el Capitan without installing it

Is there a way to download el Capitan image but stop there after download completes without installing it, and install it later?

My friend is not very technical and I would like to help her upgrading to el Capitan, but I want her to download the image before we meet, because download would take hours.

Yes, it's there! I must have missed it. It's unchecked now. Now for the long wait for the download! And then to decide when to install it........Thanks for the help!

    Hi, Mizcandy,

I had the same issue as you. I can confirm, if you follow the instructions of User go_pack, and untick both INSTALL APP UPDATES  and INSTALL OS X UPDATES, you can download OS X El Capitan. Once in your computer, it will ask if you are ready to install. I just quit the installer (click on QUIT from bottom of dropdown menu at top left of screen under the Apple icon). I am using Yosemite but am far from ready to risk installing El Capitan because of various older programs which I use and earn a living from.

"Install OS X El Capitan" app is showing in my Applications folder. Should there be an issue with that in the future, the fact you have downloaded it once means it will show in your App Store purchases, and you can retrieve it from there again at some time in the future, if necessary.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
