Q: hs_genieo.smjg

This started this morning.  My TrendoMicro antivirus logged an threat called "HS_GENIEO.SMJG" located in /system/library/coreservices/mrt.app/contents/macos/mrt  I cannot delete this file and when I run the virus scan nothing is found.  Yet, everytime I use Safari, that threat pops up and is logged.  I have no clue what to do, please help!

It's a false positive. Remove the worthless, time-wasting Trend Micro product by following the instructions on this page. Restart. If the program was incompletely removed, reinstall it and start over.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product again.

There are many scammers out there. You fell for one unfortunately. Even though there are NO viruses for Mac, these companies still insist on trying to con people into buying their rubbish through lies. As for Genieo, well that is more Adware, often hidden in other third party apps downloaded, or often mislabeled. MacKeeper, perhaps the worse of them all, are currently the subject of legal proceedings against them at present. Hopefully it will happen to others.

To remove Malware and Adware, try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac, a free app. If you are not comfortable using it (I have used the free version on many Macs with complete success, and then trash it after use) then try the harder, but no more effective way with

So I've been running TrendMicro on my 2011 MacBook Air for four years now and have never had the "hs_genieo.smjg" thing happen until I updated my system to El Capitan 10.11. It has always run incredibly smoothly. I'm not sure if anyone else had to do this, but I was also instructed to remove my "incompatible" TrendMicro after updated, only to then reinstall and update the program yet again. So I would venture to say that this is likely an issue regarding compatibility with OS X El Capitan.

Same here I been usung trend micro since I got my MacBook Pro in 2012 and never had an issue until my upgrade to El Capitan.  To make matters worse my touchpad has gone haywire and it looks like someone hacked or is using my computer!  I guess I'll have to go to the Apple Store tomorrow.

Trend Micro is rubbish and in no way related to Genieo. That was your downloading intervention.

    Sorry.

I Just bought an 11" MacBook Air. Opened the box, set it up, did the OSX update straight away to El Capitan. I then installed Trend Micro Titanium.

I immediately encountered the same problem. A warning about "hs_genieo.smjg" followed by the internet access being blocked and then the macbook completely froze and would not respond to anything.

An Internet search reveals this seems to be happening to everybody with Trend Micro who updated to El Capitan. I'm no tech whiz but considering this and the fact that my Macbook was literally brand new and I hadn't so much as googled on it yet, I'm inclined to agree that it is an issue regarding compatibility with OSX El Capitan. WIthout Trend Micro running there seems to be no issues so I have just left it turned off for now.

Though I've used them before, this is my first MacBook so I was unaware that virus protection is apparently not a thing they require? I'm a little hesitant to believe such a claim so I guess I'll have to go and do some more research on the topic.

Would be interested to hear what the Apple store told you?

Why on earth would you install TrendMicro on a brand new Mac? Why not throw on Nortons and wreck it completely. That is like buying a new car and stabbing a hole in the tyres! It is junk...unnecessary and damaging and will give you false positives as there is nothing for it to find during a scan.

This is my first Mac. It's not as if when you buy it in the store they're like hey by the way we don't get viruses or anything cool bye. Also said I wasn't a computer whiz. I think it's a fair enough mistake for the everyday person that doesn't use a computer all that much to assume that buying virus protection is something you're supposed to do.

Just to clarify, in case there's any remaining doubt... this is absolutely a false positive on the part of Trend Micro. The file that is being identified as malicious is Apple's malware removal tool (thus, "MRT"). It contains data that is used to identify Genieo, among other things, and remove it when the system is updated.
