mac os x will not boot up.Get white screen and flashing question mark

Have mac 0s x laptop. Snow Leopard version 10.6.8.Processor 2.16 GHz Intel core 2 du.memory 1 GB 667 MHZ ddr2, Will not boot up. Only get white screen and flashing question mark.
