I have footage in a crowded room with huge background noise (a bridal shower!). Is there a filter in Final Cut Express that will reduce the background noise so that someone speaking to the mike can be heard better?

You could download a free application like Audacity. It's fairly straightforward to use. However, if you use a directional mike in the future, such as a Rode NTG2, you won't have to deal with such a problem.
