Mail freezes and no messages are visible

I am on Lion Version 10.7.5 and Apple Mail Version 5.3 and I am using gmail as my mail client.

I suddenly are having Mail freeze and none of my mail messages in all mail boxes are visible.

It happens every time mail starts.
