Fixing Blank or White Shortcut Icons on Desktop

After downloading El Capitan, some shortcut icons on my MacBook Pro desktop are now blank/white. When I go into the "Get Info" for the icon I see the actual image. How can I restore icons to how they originally looked.

I made new aliases of the affected shortcuts, then put the blank ones in the trash. Name ending will be slightly different (eg alias or alias2). Works fine after that.

(Note that if you look in the trash before emptying it, the icons look normal again, but if you try to put them back on the desktop, they become blank again.)
