Q: "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error after EL Capitan goes to sleep and wakes up again.

Hi, community.

On public launch day, I upgraded my Macs (Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15", Mid 2012 MacBook Peo 15", Late 2011 MacBook Air and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro) to OS X El Capitan. In general terms, the upgrade process went smooth.

But, I've been presenting an annoying problem:

Each time any of my computers go to sleep, if they have an external hard drive connected to an external USB Hub (unpowered), they present a "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error after they wake up again.

I didn't have any of these issues with Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks nor Yosemite! Only now, when I upgraded to El Capitan, things are getting annoying.

Does any one else present the same issues and, do you have a solution to this problem.

Thanks for reading.

Before manually putting the computer to sleep last night via the Apple Manu, Under System Preferences/Energy Saver, I disabled (i.e. removed the check mark next to)  "Enable Power Nap" and this morning I didn't have the warnings. We'll see if this continues to be a workaround, but I shouldn't have to do that!

Having the same issue. Upgraded to 10.11.1 from 10.10.5 last friday and everytime I wake my Macbook Pro from sleep I get the ejected incorrectly message. Never had this before. It's a Western Digital Elements 2 GB hard drive in 2 partitions, connected to my 24" cinema display. I replaced the cable but this didn't fix it. I got them now connected directly to my macbook to see if it makes any difference. A really weird bug..

I was hopeful for this work-around. But it did not work for me. Same "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message if it's in sleep for more than a few minutes. I was also hopeful that 10.11.1 would fix it. It did not work.

No workarounds have worked so far. The latest OS update did not fix it.

Yep, my work-around has failed me today too. Sorry. It's really odd that when I wake the computer, the drives are mounted. I was looking to see if there was a log somewhere that showed when the drives had become ejected and was remounted. Anyone know of any logs like that?

The issue seems not to occur when I connect the hard drive directly to my Macbook Pro (it was attached on my cinema display). Do you have your drives connected directly or through a hub? I will also try a SMC reset now.

The 2 external USB 3 drives which Im having issues with is indeed connected directly to my 2013 Mac Pro (no hubs) I Don't have any problems with the Thunderbolt Pegasus R4 RAID.

Exactly the same problem here. External Seagate Expansion drive (used as TimeMachine backup drive) connected directly to my iMac. No problems until El Cap, and the 10.11.1 update hasn't fixed it.

SMC reset didn't fix anything and the issue comes back as soon as I attach the drive again to my cinema display.

After a few days with 'Power Nap' switched off, nothing has disconnected from the back of my iMac - USB 2 bus powered, USB3 bus powered and mains, Firewire via Thunderbolt mains and eSata via USB 3 mains.

That seems to have fixed it for me.

I'll try turning off Power Nap again and see if that doesn't fix my problem as I thought it had once before. My external USB 3 drives are also buss powered.

Update: I reset SMC again after 10.11.1:

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

And turned off Enable Power Nap in Energy Saver. Seemed to work yesterday.

Not sure which if either or both did the trick. Turning off Enable Power Nap is a work-around from an earlier post, thank you.

I don't have Power Nap (iMac mid 2011) but I'll try unchecking 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' in Energy Saver and will see what happens.

I already had 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' unchecked for a while so I'm afraid that won't fix it. My 2011 macbook pro doesn't support powernap. For me the issue is again fixed by connecting the drives directly to my macbook instead of to my cinema display.

I'm afraid all I have to add is, "Yeah, me too." But I will be following this thread for sure.

Yep, me too. iMac with no problem for three years with LaCie 1TB drives....until I updated to El Capitan. Mine reconnect with no issue but the notifications are a PITA.
