Q: "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error after EL Capitan goes to sleep and wakes up again.

Hi, community.

On public launch day, I upgraded my Macs (Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15", Mid 2012 MacBook Peo 15", Late 2011 MacBook Air and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro) to OS X El Capitan. In general terms, the upgrade process went smooth.

But, I've been presenting an annoying problem:

Each time any of my computers go to sleep, if they have an external hard drive connected to an external USB Hub (unpowered), they present a "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error after they wake up again.

I didn't have any of these issues with Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks nor Yosemite! Only now, when I upgraded to El Capitan, things are getting annoying.

Does any one else present the same issues and, do you have a solution to this problem.

Thanks for reading.

I miss Steve Jobs, Apple has severely declined in several ways since his passing. I have this very same issue with WD Passport hard drives where it NEVER happened before switching to El Capitan. Sad, very sad.

Received new dual drive dock (Xiaobi) from alert Amazon seller (who read my Amazon review about ejects and contacted me with replacement offer); spontaneous ejects have ended.  Formerly affected drives now sleep without ejecting under 10.11.6.  USB 3.0 is working with SansDigital, Unitek, Xiaobi enclosures and third party PCIe USB 3.0 card on my early 2009 Mac Pro.

All is well with the world.

If my experience can be generalized, those of you experiencing sudden ejects might care to contact your drive enclosure supplier to see if they have had issues with faulty SATA to USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt hardware.

Unprintable.  After a day of flawless performance, I woke this morning to "Disk Not Ejected Properly" alerts for two drives in my replacement dual drive dock.  Thought I'd beaten this monster.  Not so.

So sorry to hear that, yes, it's a daily morning grind, seems we're all stuck with zero help.

Changed Energy Saver prefs setting for Computer sleep to "Never."  Spontaneous ejects stopped.  "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" remains checked but, strangely, does not eject drives, which can clearly be heard to spin down when not in use.  So it seems that I, at least, have a computer sleep issue.

I feel as if I'm trapped in a Socratic dialogue going in circles -- one of Dante's circles.  With computer set to never sleep, two drives in my Xiaobi dock ejected on their own, but only once today, and not for many hours now.  Were I the pulling-hair-out type, I'd be bald.

Below is my experience with Tech Support from Highpoint when I purchased the RocketU 1144D USB 3.0 PCIe Card for Mac. My computer is a MacPro 2008 v3,1 Quad-Core. 32GB Ram,

As far as I know with regards to USB 3.0 PCIe Card/controllers, they will eject when computers go to sleep using our older computer desktops, and the Problem according to HighPoint Tech, is that they have no control over Mac OS operating System.

    7.

    1. The data is safe even when you see the message "not eject properly" during sleep.
    2. If you don't have PC platform, you can skip that firmware update.
    3. If there is no data activity during sleep, data should be safe without loss.

    research Tuesday 22nd Mar 16 @ 7:11pm

    6. The firmware "FW131025.zip" is for PC system only. Unfortunately there is no package for Mac platform.

    webupdate Tuesday 22nd Mar 16 @ 3:10am

    5.

Is this package a Windows PC package? Because I'm on Mac OS 10.11.4

Is there a package for OS MAC 10.11.4?

    4.

The sleep is not controlled by us since we don't have S/W control. The driver (sleep mode) is handled by OSX native USB driver.

The package that we provided is the firmware update from USB 3.0 chip vendors. It includes the latest tune up on USB 3.0 devices. But we don't know if that helps on this case.

    3.

I've included an attachment to show how many times I get the error message when my computer wakes up. Please take a look.

a couple of more questions please...

    1. What is the attachment you put in your response for?

    2. I'm saddened that none of these cards will go the sleep with my operating system. Is there a potential to lose data, even though I eject the drives before the computer goes to sleep?

    3. What about putting the "Computer Sleep" in system preferences Energy Saver to "Never?" Will I still get the error OR...

    4. What about "Put hard disks to sleep when possible? Can this option possible work?
    b. What I mean is if I put my system to never sleep, but also check "Put hard disks to sleep when possible?

    Thank you!

The issue is related to OSX native xHCI driver. All products you mentioned are running the same way. We don't have control of the software package so not much we can help.

    Problem Description

    I Just Purchased:
    - RocketRaid 644L for Mac 10.11 (No Issues)
    - RocketU 1144D PCIe 5Gb/s USB 3.0 Card. (Issues - Please See Below)

    My Computer is: MacPro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2 x 2.8 GHz (Early 2008 v3,1)
My Operating System is: Mac OS X 10.11.3

    Issue for RocketU 1144D:
    1. I eject my USB Hard Drives, then I put my computer to sleep, or it goes to sleep on it’s own, but when the computer wakes up the get the following error messages "Disk Not Ejected Properly". Once again this happens even if I eject all my USB disks before the computer goes to sleep, as advised by your tech support.
    2. Any solutions for this card?

Thank you for your time, and looking forward to hearing from you!

As I have stated before. This is not just a USB issue. I have a Newer Tech eSata PCI card for external drives. It exibits the same problem. I just set computer sleep to never and the problem goes away.

Precisely my point, however when I set sleep to never it still get the Error msg?

Anyhow that's why I put up my post, to show that these cards may not be the problem. According to my PCIe manufacturer, it's the older macs, with the newer OS X system that is the problem. Basically they are telling me Apple's fault.

I have a brand new 21" iMac running El Capitan.  When the computer sleeps, my Lacie 1 TB external via USB disconnects, as well.

Trying the SMC reset and keeping the sleep going to see if it works...

This is a long-standing problem that continues for me to this day. I have tried many things.

    - connect directly to usb port

    - reformatted drive

    - deselected Put Hard disks to sleep when possible option

    - SMC reset

    - installed Mountain

    Nothing seems to work.

I have a solution. I recently purchased 3 WD My Passport Pro 2TB ext hard drives that are Mac certified with a Thunderbolt connection. These drives are already formatted for Mac OS's and have a built-in Thunderbolt cable, which are pretty neat. Since I started using these for all three of my brand new Mac Pro desktops with El Capitan for Time Machine back-ups, I have not been receiving this error message any longer. Yes these new ext drives are expensive, but any Mac certified Thunderbolt ext SSD's will probably fix the issue for most. Buffalo also offers Mac certified Thunderbolt ext SSD's which are a bit less in price. Hope this helps. Thanks.

You consider that a solution? So all of us who are experiencing this headache should simply go out and purchase brand new hard drives and transfer all of the data on existing drives over ALL BECAUSE Mac has a recent compatibility issue they leave unaddressed? Thanks so much for that useless suggestion.

To BKRockStar: If your think about it, it is a solution, I didn't say it was the end all. My company can provide the budget for this solution. I have tried everything in this forum and elsewhere trying to resolve this issue. This worked for me; You're Welcome!!
